This initiative titled, “All you need to know about the music business,” shall be set up in two parts: the first as a discussion and Q&A session involving Mr. Greenberg; and the second which will delve into workshop related sessions, where both foreign and locally based executives play tracks brought in by audience members, and discuss the winning elements of each production.

DeciBel, first launched in May 2001, has been responsible for introducing hundreds of music and film executives from all over the world to the music and culture of Trinidad and Tobago, and has had a multitude of achievements to date: from the signing of the signing of artists to small labels, to the placement of local material on millions of CD’s worldwide.

"Jammin'On Some Heavy Metal"

NO! IT IS NOT A HEAVY METAL GROUP. We talkin' about one instrument in particular that sets this band apart from the rest. If we didn't see it, we don't think we would have understood it properly. Ah mean, "A steel pan in a rock band?" you'll say the same thing when you see this band. Well... that is until yuh hear their name. Skid"Nevely. Then you'll say "What de hell dat mean?" And they'll answer you the same way they answer everyone else. "We just came up with it and thought it was funny." (Now notice they didn't really answer the question. They won't tell you, but if you figure it out, you'll have a hard laugh at the audacity of it).

Anyway, it's lead vocalist Andrew McIntosh on rhythm guitar and tenor pan, Mark Wallace (no relation to William Wallace from Braveheart) on bass and back up vocals, Anthony Abraham on drums and Shane de Silva on lead guitar and back up vocals. These fellas tight. At least tight enough to win the Anchorage Pop Rock Awards this year. That was their first "BIG" gig,
which is not surprising when you consider the band was officially formed only four months before that appearance. Yuh see, what happened was, Andrew moved here from St. Lucia two years ago. One time he started looking for a band, because... well... like he said "everybody's looking for a band!" Usual scene on the local rock circuit. He began working at Audiocon where he met Shane, and after some persuasion, he convinced him to link up. Around that time, Mark was leaving Kryptic, so he got drafted one time. All that was left to fill was that drummer's seat. The group had their eyes on Anthony, but he was doing CXC back then. So as soon as the exams were over, they snatched him and started jamming together.

And that's a two-year old history that leads right up to four months before the show.

More importantly, they're doing lots of things right now, the main one we think is mixing that pan into what can be most accurately categorised as Punk Rock. Where dem come up with that idea boy? Well Andrew, the pan man, had the answer. "I've been playing pan for fourteen years. I did some arranging for a band in St. Lucia called Pan Time and played with another steel band after that, so I wasn't going to start a rock group and not put a pan in it." And it is a unique treat. We talkin' bout the band breakin' down to a rock version of calypso jam session. Is something yuh can't really appreciate just so. Yuh have to hear them.

"Fete de la musique with Alliance Francaise"

THE threat of rain failed to put a damper recently at Fete de la Musique concert at Pier 1, Chagaramas as the crowd of people came out for the free concert hosted by Alliance Francaise. Making a Major impact at the event was local rock band, Skid"Nevely, which delivered an impressive performance that featured the group doing all original material.

Led by vocalist, Andrew McIntosh who also doubles up on guitar and tenor pan, the band kicked off it's set with "On Deaf Ears" which it followed with "Tables."

Along with great musicianship the band members interacted with the audiance throughout their performance, joking around and chatting with the many girls who had flocked to the foot of the stage as the band was preparing to perform.

Even the people who were not rock music lovers seemed to enjoy the band's music, which is a blend of punk rock with subtle Caribbean highlights underscored by the pan. McIntosh's unique playing style on the pan added with the jagged guitar riffs delivered by Shane de Silva, made for a truly fresh sound. - Saturday Express 2nd July 2005 by Wayne Bowman

Bio

The force of music has proven strong enough to pull together four young Trinidadians from different cultures to become one powerful vehicle: the sound of Skid”Nevely.

After living in St. Lucia for sixteen years, arranging for a well-known steelpan orchestra, Andrew McIntosh returns to his homeland Trinidad, prepared to make his imaginings of a rock band a reality. Shallun Sammy is just as ready for the ride as he constantly practises his bass lines. Shane de Silva jumps on board with a wealth of experience in rocking out, and the final element, shredding drumsticks by the hour, Anthony Abraham.

Skid”Nevely is a band breaking every red light and Stop sign in their way. Too lively to be confined by the rules, their energy flows out into their steelpunk/rock music and jumps out at the audience onstage. They are busy creating a sound like no other, blending punch-line melody rock music with a tenor steelpan and calypso rhythms.

Sure to raise some eyebrows on the way and invite laughter with their onstage behaviour and good humour, Skid”Nevely is ready for the road, taking every listener along for an unforgettable ride.
