Bio

Skillet Grease is a primal blues-rock duo (electrified resonator guitar accompanied by drums/percussion) exploring gnarly old-time timbres; 5-watt amps and Leslie speakers pulled from granny's old Wurlitzer organ... 1920s tube-lug snares and marching bass drums... with a deep-fried feel and solid grooves.

A shared admiration of the stripped-down slide-guitar music of artists like Hound Dog Taylor and R.L. Burnside brought Skillet Grease together in the spring of 2009.

The duo's sound has evolved to include influences of Delta and North Texas styles, early rock, and deep funk. Arrangements feature intense dialog between resonator guitar and percussion.

Respected guitar instructor by day, slide-guitar slayer by night, Dan Johnson is affectionately known as “Shiney.” He doesn't let his formal training (Masters in Music with a Classical Guitar Performance major) stand in his way. Although he can cover classical, rock, pop, and jazz, his first love is slide-guitar blues. Shiney says, “Any time I’m playing the Tri-Cone is a good time…”

Tim “T-Man” Ennis (drums) is the group’s elder; his other current projects include heavyweight dub champions Systemwide and two Second-Line brass bands: Rocket Stove Workshop and BrassRoots Movement.

A series of rackety basement recording sessions netted the group a pan-full of sizzling, popping songs released in limited quantities in Fall of 2009 as the EP “Kitchen Fire.”
