Bio
As a response to the 2011 Andrew Bolt anti discrimination case, Skin choir collaboratively compose and perform songs that are based around the themes of modern Aboriginality; cultural identity, urban living and mainstream stereotyping.
Providing a message to audiences that Aboriginality is not determined by color of skin but community, kinships and culture. Sharing in the knowledge that modern Aboriginality is a growing and evolving culture that is engrained in Australian culture, not separate, idealistic or tokenistic.
The purpose of Skin is to inform audiences of what it means to be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and that it is not determined only by the colour of skin but by kinships, community connections and cultural makeup.
Developed by Jessie Lloyd, Skin Choir is a collaboration project produced by Songlines Aboriginal Music through its Artist Support Program. An initiative that supports local Indigenous singer songwriters by generating increased performance opportunities and broader skills development.
SKIN’s sound is uplifting, energetic and has a flare of effervescent comedy. With song writing collaborations between James Henry, Deline Briscoe and Lee Morgan, Jessie Lloyd leads choir into a direction that empowers and informs. Aiming to give a true and honest representation of today’s Indigenous Australians.
