Bio

Elaborate rhyme schemes, poetic delivery, philosophical lyrics, a distinct tone of voice (metallic yet harmonious), and a near-perfect balance between joke and serious make Skippy Skip’s rapping an impressive mix of linguistic genius. The organization of the music breaks free of standard radio fare, with long verses, escapades into unfamiliar rhythmic structures, multiple key changes, and colorful harmonies; Skip’s classical education is ever-present in his music.

Taking a cue from prog rock bands like Rush, Dream Theater, and Symphony X (as well as jazz pianist Dave Brubeck and classical composers Bartok and Stravinsky), odd-time meters often permeate Skip’s music, giving him a much different rhythmic language from other rappers. When discussing odd-time in hip hop, Blackalicious’s “Chemical Calisthenics” and Eminem’s “Won’t Back Down” are about the only examples that come to mind.

Thematically, Skippy Skip’s rhymes bear numerous influences. Skip’s music often references history, mythology, modern science, Shakespearean drama, Aesop’s Fables, 90s cartoons, 80s pop culture, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, sports folklore, and just about anything in between. No matter how good Skippy Skip may be the first time, the next time the listener will always find something new. Put together, the various themes of Skippy Skip songs create an atmosphere intellectual showmanship.

Skippy Skip’s independent, DIY ethic and musical brilliance allow him to wear many musical hats: performer, composer, guitarist, singer, rapper, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, band leader, ethnomusicologist, producer, promoter, event planner, cover art designer, and so much more. Still, this is only part of a much larger picture: musician, artist, teacher, philosopher, poet, writer, scientist, historian, activist, environmentalist, humorist, Eagle Scout, innovator, and leader. Few stars shine as bright, or as consistently, as Skippy Skip. In the midst of varying styles, changing times, complex elements, and multiple facets, few captains of any musical genre can navigate their way through the perfect storm of imagination. But Skippy Skip is one skipper who makes his ship of creativity sail just right. A modern musician for a modern era.
