"Sky Between Leaves – Sky Between Leaves (2012)"

- Escafandrista Musical

"Sky Between Leaves - new single Sky Between Leaves"

Sky Between Leaves - new single Sky Between Leaves
Supercool band alert! Sky Between Leaves are a new alt-rock/Krautonica band from London. They just released their debut single, "Sky Between Leaves" (yes, the band is named Sky Between Leaves and their new song is also titled "Sky Between Leaves" - Talk Talk did that too back in the day).

The single "Sky Between Leaves" is awesome - it features a mighty dance groove with shoegazer/dreampop vocals, plus if that wasn't cool enough, there's also a sample of Jarvis Cocker! Fun fact: Sky Between Leaves named themselves after a comment Cocker made describing the first time he wore glasses - realizing that the holes in the trees were "the sky between the leaves."

Listen to the awesome "Sky Between Leaves" and download it from Soundcloud or Bandcamp. - Cristina Rocks

"Sky Between Leaves"

I'm really excited about these guys. Sky Between Leaves is a London-based trio that named themselves after the Jarvis Cocker's story of the first time he wore glasses. It's not easy to define them as their music combines elements of various genres into lush, ethereal and dreamy soundscapes. The end result is something so surreal that it sends my whole being into ecstasy. Simply put Sky Between Leaves' unique brand of shoegaze/dreampop/whatnot is just brilliant. A band to watch! - Against the oddz

"Independent outlook /// Sky Between Leaves ‘Sky Between Leaves’ [Single] 2012"

BY OLGA AUGUST 28, 2012 SKY BETWEEN LEAVES
A pocketful of enchanting tunes with a psychedelic twist, unearthly sensations, original take on making music… It’s all about the three-piece act Sky Between Leaves from East London. Comprising Tito on vocals and guitars, Julie on drums and piano, and Brenno on bass and synth, Sky Between Leaves take their name from Jarvis Cocker’s story on his realisation after putting on glasses that holes in the trees were actually the sky between leaves. The imagery is pretty striking and it’s high time to wake up to the sounds of the universe.

Sky Between Leaves’ self-titled single is a warm wave of embracing, penetrating sound which absorbs the elements unearthly, enchanting and highly enticing. It is adorned with heavy rumbling, lead by the vocals of great depths and powers, and tightened by saturated gloom. Hazy moods are orchestrated by fuzzy chords – mystifying, appealing, lurring. Air comes alive in vibrations in creepy, mysterious silhouettes of intricate shapes; purely hypnotising, droning and trance-like moods fill the whole track from the beginning to the end. The feeling of unearthliness prevails, and ultimately takes listeners on a journey to a parallel dreamy world.

The hardest thing with Sky Between Leaves would be fitting them in a particular genre, but it’s hardly necessary as, incorporating a lot of influences including the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Tones On Tail, and Can, Sky Between Leaves have developed their own signature sound which can exist out of the box only. If you dig deeper, you’ll find the hidden treasures and the time spent will be worth all the efforts.

"The Reflected Sky"

There exists in music a special category of songs that are remarkable even if you’ve never heard a single note: Tunes titled after the very same artist or band who recorded them. Such eponymous songs include Talk Talk’s “Talk Talk” and Living In A Box’s “Living In A Box,” for instance. There are also those that fall just outside inclusion by adding a word or two, like Big Country’s “In A Big Country,” Queen’s “Killer Queen,” and Stray Cats’ “Stray Cat Strut.”
Lest you think such inward-looking overlap is a thing of the past, more recently Crystal Stilts and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart have released self-titled songs. Add to the pile Sky Between Leaves, the London-based alt-rock/nu-gaze trio that takes their name from Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker’s story of the first time he wore glasses, realizing that the holes in the trees were actually the “sky between the leaves.”
According to Sky Between Leaves’ bio, Cocker’s “visual perception translates to the band’s sound which takes us through feverish dreams and stroboscopic haze only to wake us to a deafening glittery reality.” I don’t know about all that, but “Sky Between Leaves” serves as a pretty fantastic introduction to Tito Cordeiro (guitar/sampler/vocals), Brenno Balbino (bass/synth/sampler), and Julie Favero (drums/percussion).
Nicking the oft-sampled drum break from The Soul Searchers’ “Ashley’s Roachclip” – hello P.M. Dawn, Duran Duran, et al. — Sky Between Leaves’ self-titled song reminds me of Honey’s Dead-era Jesus And Mary Chain. - Popservations

Bio

Sky Between Leaves makes music that oscillates seamlessly between shimmering psychedelia, pounding post-punk and cinematic krautrock.

Born from the East London bedroom recordings of former Drugstore guitarist Tito, SBL found its definitive form with the integration of drummer/pianist Julie and bass/synth player Brenno.

A careful listening to SBL's songs reveals their influences: Tones on Tail's doom pop beats, Can's fluidly percolating bass lines, the monolithic reverberation of My Bloody Valentine's guitars and Love & Rockets ghostly vocals; all subtly dotted around SBL's own sound which remains heartfelt and taut.

The band’s name was taken from Jarvis Cocker’s narrative of being given glasses as a child and realizing that the holes in the trees were in fact the “sky between the leaves”. That enthralling imagery translates to the band’s sound and the elicited sentiment is simple yet poignant: it's like awakening from a feverish dream to a wildly glittery reality.
