"Skyline Pigeons, 'Alright' -- Free MP3 Download - Spinner"

Artist: Skyline Pigeons
Hail From: Los Angeles
Song: 'Alright'
Album: 'House of Mysteries' [iTunes] [Amazon] []
Sounds Like: Laura Marling, Twin Sister

In Their Words: "Alright is a song that sort of captures the philosophy behind the album and the feeling of letting go, moving forward, and being 'OK' with who you are and 'OK' with falling in love again." -- Singer Roxanne Teti - Spinner Magazine

"Skyline Pigeons, 'Lucid'- Video of the Day"

Artist: Skyline Pigeons
Video: "Lucid"
Highlight: "The video definitely reflected the internal loneliness one can feel at times, even when they are surrounded by people," Singer Caroline Teti told Spinner. Singer Roxanne Teti added, "Film-wise, we wanted 'Lucid' to feel like a stylistic documentary, something that captures reality and communicates authenticity while also still possessing a voyeuristic vibe full of abstract moments. It definitely feels inspired by the cinema vérité movement."

"Twin Peaks Pop from Skyline Pigeons"

Sisters Roxanne and Caroline Teti, a.k.a. the Skyline Pigeons bill themselves as shoegaze and psychedelic pop, although their music is considerably darker and more compelling than those tags would suggest. Their new album House of Mysteries could do without the flat, Prozac’ed Lana Del Rey vocals, but the songwriting can be killer. Ostensibly inspired by the loss of their home in one of the California wildfires, many of the songs have a deliciously understated, lurid noir pop edge. The opening anthem, The Cycle blends noir 60s pop with biting, lo-fi distorted guitar and swirly organ. “All your secrets gonna turn to dust, when all is said and done it’s not gonna matter too much” – foreshadowing, maybe? Together could be a particularly dark Aimee Mann song, sinewy lead guitarlines against terse piano that starts out slow and brooding and then picks up with a defiant bounce.

The most gripping song here is Lucid, building a dissociative, surreal ambience as simple, staccato Rhodes piano and terse guitar grows from ominous art-pop to an explosive, anthemic intensity like the flames flickering around outside and then suddenly exploding into a firestorm. They follow that with the Lynchian psychedelic folk of Alright, the distantly longing, noir pop escape anthem Stardust Collector and its loaded outer-space imagery, and then Unrequited, a ballad that reaches for a creepily dreamy Julee Cruise vibe.

High goes for an anthemic rock feel, apprehensive slide guitar licks over a lush, clanging, roaring layers of chords, like something the Church might have demoed circa 1988. As Fire She Blows slowly climbs with a stark garage rock bassline, the creepy organ comes in, a bit of guitar feedback flickers and then builds to a hypnotic roar, this could be the Black Angels with a woman on the mic. “The earth is bursting” becomes “The earth is thirsty,” then the song subsides, only to rise again. The album ends with Take Me Back, smoldering and longing, equal parts Orbison retro pop and ornate art-rock. A couple of tracks here are throwaways, but that’s a small price to pay for all the good stuff. The Skyline Pigeons’ next scheduled show is August 3 at Bootleg Bar, 2220 Beverly Blvd. at Roselake in Los Angeles.

"Skyline Pigeons: Music Review"

Female-fronted bands remain a rarity. Talented ones such as Skyline Pigeons are the true exception. So I got quite excited when I heard Skyline Pigeons. I know I’m often stuck in the 90s but I do hear elements of Lush and Curve in Skyline Pigeons. Santa Barbara, California-based sisters Roxanne and Caroline Teti anchor this edgy band whose sound crosses from punk to garage rock to darker, twisty psychedelic machinations. The musical arrangements complement the emotionality of each song whether angry, melancholy or blissful. This moodiness makes this such an engaging album. The band’s debut album House of Mysteries opens with the sultry confidence and great lyrics of “The Cycle”—“all your secrets are going to turn to dust/ when all is said and done, we’re not going to matter too much/ you shake up from me/ you break up with me/ the cycle goes on.” Breathy vocals fit the alt-country “Together”—“hit my heart like a lottery card/ for you to get lucky.” Anger and sadness collide on the stunning “Fire She Blows.” The piano-ballad closer “Take Me Back” nearly brings chills with its exquisite intensity. Skyline Pigeons is one of the best indie-pop bands I’ve heard this year. - Entertainment Realm - Amy Steele

"Skyline Pigeons: relishing life anew"

As much as the concept of writing an album is many times orchestrated by a desire to unify some arbitrary theme, there are instances when that idea emerges because of pure circumstance. House of Mysteries, the debut release by Skyline Pigeons, was concocted after sisters Roxanne and Caroline Teti went through the unfortunate event of losing their home after a calamitous wild fire in Santa Barbara. So, in a sense, they took the time to reflect after that traumatic experience and decided to channel their grief toward healing by creative expression. Through Roxanne and Caroline’s harmonic interplay, House of Mysteries never goes through the motions, opting to take a musical journey that takes them down different paths – starry-eyed folk arrangements, jagged garage rock, arpeggiated synth effects and even some fine ol’ country twang all make appearances. Supervised by notable producer Ryan Hedlock, it never fails to evoke these shimmering moments of impermanence, which considering the surprises life can take, is something the Teti sisters never take for granted in their versatile compositions. They’ll be celebrating the CD release of House of Mysteries with a performance on Molly Malone’s on June 1st. - Juan Edgardo Rodríguez (@juanerodriguez)

"FILTER Magazine - News - Discover The Undiscovered: Skyline Pigeons"

Skyline Pigeons is a shoegaze-rock/psych-pop group from Los Angeles, CA. Members Roxanne and Caroline originally hail from the Northeast cities of Philadelphia and Toronto. On the East, the musician-sisters began playing classical piano, violin, flute and guitar. In 2001 they moved out West to Santa Barbara, CA and in 2009 they migrated to Los Angeles, CA and formed “Skyline Pigeons” with Andrew Harrison, Ben Potter, and Orly Gal. Their musical style seeks to reflect personal stories of romantic fury, social contemplation, and lived experience. While the sound of the Skyline Pigeons draws from elements of pop, expect to hear strands of country twang and driving force of post-punk, as well as the silky hue of psychedelic rock rifts.

A brief conversation with the band….

Who are your main influences?
We are very much influenced by memories and the recognition of capturing a moment through song. We tend to write most freely when we let the creative juices flow like a stream of consciousness without placing any boundaries on the song’s structure or lyrical content. We like recording these processes and labeling them with dates and times just as one would do with items of nostalgia. This also helps us try and remember what we’ve written while in a transcendental mindset that lacks hesitation and promotes a “sonic libido” or a notion that feels gratifying to the senses.

In terms of style and vibe I feel like we are mostly influenced by the harmonies and melodies of the late 50’s and early 60’s and psychedelic rock and folk music. We’re inspired by the cultural consciousness and atmospheric projections of Bob Dylan, The Doors, The Velvet Underground, Elton John, and Leonard Cohen. The way Leonard Cohen grasps and chills an audience with such undying resolution and delivery is so consuming and inspiring. Mazzy Star, PJ Harvey, and Cat Power are more contemporary groups/songwriters we have grown up listening to as budding songwriters and have been influenced by their husky reverb meshed voices, instrumental choices, and simplistic and atmospheric musical arrangements.

How did you meet?
Caroline and I (Roxanne) are sisters and so we’ve been writing music and lyrics together since adolescence and teenage youth. At the start of our collaboration Caroline would often write these beautiful piano compositions in her bedroom, and then we would try to match some of my (Roxanne) post-modern poetry to the tunes with simple melodies. This method evolved over time as I picked up the guitar and we formed a five-piece band in Los Angeles with Andrew Harrison (lead guitar), Ben Potter (Drums), and Orly Gal (bass). We met Andrew in college and he introduced us to his Colorado hometown friend Ben, who is studying percussion at the Music Institute in Hollywood. From constantly playing in the Los Angeles music scene, we soon met Orly and she began playing bass for us. Mostly with our songs we try to tell stories and communicate a vibe that is authentic yet accessible. “We write the songs in their most raw form and then we can all work meticulously on the arrangement but only after the spark of conception has occurred” – Caroline.

What is your biggest achievement as a band to date?
Our biggest achievement was working with Ryan Hadlock and recording a full-length album at Beat Creek Studios in Woodinville Washington. Ryan Hadlock has produced some of our favorite bands like Blonde Redhead and the Black Heart Procession and it was an honor to make a record with him. It was a life changing experience to record in such a peaceful studio with so much soul and history. After we lost our house in a wildfire in 2009, making this album and finally recording many of these songs that were inspired by the traumatic experience of loss and rebirth, felt like a huge accomplishment for us both personally and musically. We are very proud of these songs but they are only a bypro - filtermagazine.com

"Skyline Pigeons: New album “House of Mysteries”"

Background: On June 5th, 2012, Santa Barbara/Los Angeles, California-based Roxanne and Caroline Teti, sisters of the shoegaze-rock/psych-pop band Skyline Pigeons, will be celebrating the release of their debut full-length album, House of Mysteries.

House of Mysteries is an 11-track collection inspired by the traumatic and liberating experience of loss and rebirth, following the Santa Barbara wide fires that claimed their home - and all of their possessions.

You've seen it on the news. Devastation over wild fires. Displaced families, priceless family heirlooms gone, and everything people once had now ashes. We watch this from the comfort of our homes on the news, feeling bad for the faceless people we see on our TV screens, but that feeling soon dissipates as the next horrific 5 o'clock news story comes on. However, what if it wasn't just a news broadcast? What if it was your life? Your reality? And you lost everything?

Each song on House of Mysteries takes the listener inside the emotional journey of such a reality, the way one travels from room to room of a home. Skyline Pigeons are able to use each individual song to explore, uncover, and confront the hopes, scars, and fears that become buried in the human subconscious. While each song maintains independence, their essence is familiar yet fresh, the way a chapter of a book flows freely yet is bound by story—a story with songs intriguing and soul biting.

Rounding out the band with Andrew Harrison, Ben Potter, and Orly Gal, the outfit blends influences as far and wide as folk-roots, post-punk, and psychedelic-rock to create their dark, yet warming pop concoction. Much of their musical style is influenced by the era of the 50s, the garage rock era of the 60s, and the country rock era of 70s. Throughout the record the musician sisters detail loss, sorrow, and heartbreak—relating to the fire—but also recalling other emotionally taxing or exciting times, such as a break-up with a loved one or the energized spark of new love, loneliness and isolation or the epiphany of sense of self and experiencing the rawness of fun.

The album’s eclectic layout carries a consistent but diverse sound through each of the songs and their various use of instrumentation. From the upbeat rock anthem of “Get Up” to the haunting and intriguing psychedelic trip into an apocalyptic scenario that is "Fire She Blows," the record is as suspenseful as it is melodic. Expect to hear the haunting beauty of piano ballads such as “Lucid” and “Take Me Back," as well as sexy, bluesy, garage rock songs like “The Cycle” and “Tennessee," which emanate the carefree soul of California. In a mix of intense emotive tunes, hidden treasures of philosophical dreamscapes like “High," "Stardust Collector," and “Alright” allow one to forget about reality for a while. "Unrequited” and “Together” invites one to experience or revisit romantic despair, and the sad yet freeing reality of breakup.

Sisters Roxanne and Caroline’s alto and soprano ranges come together to form a beautiful vocal instrument full of sultry splendor that captivates one with a relaxed seduction. Instrumentally the record showcases a diverse mixture of poignant piano composition, soulful organ, Wurlitzer keyboard, vintage analog synths, the relaxed yet tight percussive elements of tambourine and multiple bass drums, electric guitar solos, acoustic finger picking, dreamy 12 string strumming, and garage rock rhythm distortion.

The conclusion after one listens to House of Mysteries is that The Skyline Pigeons Sound is a unique entry to the music scene. They pour their hearts and souls into every note and give the listener every bit of emotion they have, both lyrically and musically. Now the sisters want to share the songs that have meant so much to them throughout these life - and mind - altering experiences to others. They'll do that by hitting the road and performing in front of audiences whenever and wherever they can. - BeeHive Candy

The album takes the listener on an emotional ride with the warm, rich vocals of Roxanne and Caroline, and powerful instrumentals of Andrew Harrison, Ben Potter, and Orly Gal. The album, recorded at Bear Creek Studio in Seattle, was produced by Ryan Hadlock (Blonde Redhead, Ra Ra Riot) and mastered by Grammy award-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen (Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Cat Power, Lucinda Williams). If you like Sleigh Bells, you’ll like Skyline Pigeons. The powerful bass drum layered with whining electric guitar will cause your mind to slip into a daydream.

Concerning the process, Caroline commented, “I rediscovered a part of myself that was temporarily lost while we recorded this album. After our house burned down it paralyzed the positive energy and strength I once had. While I spent countless hours working hard on this album, I also spent a lot of time reflecting to myself in this barn (at Bear Creek) full of such unconditional love for music and I realized music is timeless. There are so many material items that can be lost; photographs and memories can turn to dust but the recordings of beautiful melodies will always be available to anyone as a reliable source of comfort—whenever they may need it.”

Roxanne added, “If anything, the fire as well as songwriting has brought me closer to embracing my true identity and working creatively as a musical team made me realize how important community is and the feeling that people are on this earth to help each other. I think our unity is something transcendent in the quality of the music.”

Our favorites from the album include “It’s Alright,” “Lucid.” And “Stardust Collector” which is dreamy and riveting.

"Paying Homage To LA’s Rock Goddesses"

In it’s heyday, The Sunset Strip was the stomping ground for testosterone-ridden rock stars like Jim Morrison, Vince Neil, Robert Plant and Axel Rose. While leather wearing, long haired, tattooed male rockers are what many associate with “The Strip,” we can’t forget the females who helped shape the face of rock ‘n’ roll – Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Cherie Currie and Stevie Nicks to name a few. In addition to being on stage, women have left their mark on the rock scene for their work as tour managers, promoters, photographers, journalists and booking agents.

To pay homage to the females of rock, The Strip’s own Brent X Mendoza invited 30 “women of rock” to come together over brunch at West Hollywood’s Rock N’ Reily’s. “Most of my favorite local bands these days are female fronted, or prominently feature female musicians so I thought it would be fun to get them all in the same room, take photos, and gather their thoughts on the industry. From there, the idea sort of blossomed as I started to think of the numerous women that run these legendary venues on The Sunset Strip, and that are major players in the Los Angeles music scene and beyond,” explains Mendoza who jokes that arranging for 30 plus female musicians and industry professionals to get out of bed for an 11 AM photo shoot on a Saturday was a far from easy task. “Given the turnout, however, I think this was really important for everyone that took part.”

ChinaShop photographer Catie Laffoon showed up to capture the event and popped into a few of the photos herself (yay Catie!).

"Women of Rock"

When Joan Jett belted out the lyrics to "I Love Rock N' Roll," it wasn't just a pop culture phenomenon. It was also a message to the world that women rockers could be just as loud, stylish and brash as their male counterparts. It's been more than 30 years since her version of the song hit the airwaves and the Billboard charts, yet its power and influence remains today.

Like a host of other powerful Sunset Strip women — Stevie Nicks, Exene Cervenka (X), Michelle Philips, Cher, The Runaways — the current generation continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be a woman in the world of rock.

While the image of women on The Sunset Strip has been stereotyped and isolated to "groupies" throughout the years, the truth is that many women on The Sunset Strip have influenced and shaped this boulevard for decades — as talent bookers, promoters, marketing directors, rock reporters, artists and entrepreneurs.

One woman who has shaped the culture and music of The Sunset Strip over the years is booker Dayle Gloria, who gave a first start to influential bands including Jane’s Addiction.

“You have to be willing to stand up for what you believe in, no matter what you are going to be called. [You can't] worry about the way you are going to be treated by the men who want to intimidate you, and that’s not easy for a lot of women that want to be liked,” she noted. “Sharon Osbourne has always been a woman that I look up to and has always been a role model to me. She's tough but fair and more times than not she is right! …To me, it doesn't matter if you are a woman or a man, if you can't take the heat, then don't get in the frying pan.”

Gloria was one of the more than 30 “women of rock” who met up for a nontraditional ladies brunch and photo session at Rock N’ Reilly’s pub earlier this month. They shared stories about the music industry and their role in it while catching up with each other over pints and plates.

Solo artist and The Stripminers musician Holland Greco was one of the artists who spoke about her personal experience working as a musician. She encouraged the upcoming generation to get involved.

“There is a great demand and place for females in music," she shared. "Get great at your instruments and craft so that you can express your ideas, perspective and whatever else you've got.”

8mm frontwoman Juliette Beavan echoed this sentiment, stating that, “Music is not for the faint of heart. It is an endeavor where the odds of survival are against you. Passion and a thick skin are recommended.”

Additionally, The Roxy Theatre’s talent buyer Megan Jacobs, who has been booking Los Angeles venues for more than 12 years while also developing her own music career as a solo artist, noted that women have obtained powerful roles throughout the past decade, yet the overall culture still has a little way to go to continue supporting women.

“There are still a lot of powerful women making big deals and controlling a lot of the moves that go down, even though we [are still] the minority,” she stated. “We're not exactly invited to the boys club to play basketball, if you know what I mean... But I have my loyal relationships in the business, and I don't let it affect my progress.”

While these women continue to rock and make their voice heard, one thing was certainly made clear during this brunch: The Sunset Strip has a supportive and close community of women both on the stage and off.

Bio

Skyline Pigeons is a shoegaze-rock/psych-pop group from Los Angeles, CA. Members Roxanne and Caroline originally hail from the Northeast cities of Philadelphia and Toronto. On the East, the musician-sisters began playing classical piano, violin, flute and guitar. In 2001 they moved out West and formed a Southern California band named “Skyline Pigeons. Their musical style seeks to reflect personal stories of romantic fury, social contemplation, and lived experience. While the sound of the Skyline Pigeons draws from elements of pop, expect to hear strands of country twang, and the driving force of post-punk, as well as the silky hue of psychedelic rock rifts.
