"sleepgoodfeelgood - The Wake Up"

Sleepgoodfeelgood - 4 guys from Cardiff who formed at the start of 2007. With an impressive catalogue of 30 songs written in just 4 and half months, they’ve already released “The Wake-Up”, an 11 track demo album, which already shows just how much potential they have.

Considering the short length of time they have been together, this album far surpasses the maturity of what you would expect to hear from a band very much still in their early days.

Opening track, “Spk in code”, starts the album off in a fantastically upbeat fashion. Catchy lyrics, a first taste of frontman, Owen Griffiths, awesomely gravely vocals, which bear a striking similarity to Fratellis front man, Jon Fratelli or Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner, to a lesser degree, and within a minute you will be impatiently wanting to hear the next song, just hoping it’s going to be as good as the opener! A song packed full with plucky guitar work and a chorus so memorable that you’ll pick it up after just one listen. A song that attaches itself to you tighter than a dog to your leg.

Pleasingly this high standard doesn’t drop once across an album, which really does ooze quality from start to finish.

“Only way we know”, is dominated by more impressive vocal work from Griffiths and, accompanied by some strong bass riffs, impresses just as much as the opening track.

Some bands, if they’re lucky, write a song that could be classed as a true “Festival song”. For me, Sleepgoodfeelgood may already have one in the bag even in these early days. “Short term fix” certainly has this potential. Starting with just guitar and vocals, it doesn’t in any way hint at what is to come. But once you’ve heard this song once you’ll be begging the chorus to begin, as the song slowly but surely edges towards the crescendo that is the chorus of “La la la la la la oh, la la la la la la la oh!” and so on. At the very least this is a perfect skanking song. If you don’t know what skanking is then you better go and Google it now, because this song is going to make you do it, whether you like it or not!

The lyrics have clearly been well thought out and are well structured throughout the songs. It appears that “Prettiest people”, could well be written about how good looking people use others, ie one night stands etc, then never return calls. A great little dig in my opinion in today’s society where way too much of this goes on, good on you guys!

The second half of the album is a lot more laid back than the first, but you may well need the rest after singing and dancing along to the first 4 or 5 songs especially! I personally prefer the first half of the album, which I believe is stronger, or at least has the more catchy numbers in my opinion..

The whole album is more than worth a listen to anyone out there who likes bands such as The Fratellis, Arctic Monkeys, or potentially even late 90’s/early 00’s band, Terris. If you like any of these then you’ll almost definitely want to take a listen to these guys.

Sleepgoodfeelgood are somehow still unsigned. I cannot believe this will be the case for much longer. To have released a demo album of such a high standard after only 3 months together and already written over 30 songs, and this is after only 4 and a half months together, just imagine where these guys are going to be in 12 months time. I would suggest signed, well known by the masses, and maybe they’ll be making some festival appearances in 2008 too.

This is a great debut album for Sleepgoodfeelgood. They have the ability to go as far as they want to in the music world, and if they keep this high standard up they will go VERY, VERY far indeed. - Monkeyfeesh Music

Bio

After much rising from various ashes, sleepgoodfeelgood was formed at the start of 2007. Progress was impressive, and after only a couple of months a 30 song catalogue was compiled, 11 of which were recorded on The Wake Up CD in March. With this already well received demo under our belts and the gig offers coming our way, we’re taking our variety of catchy songs everywhere and anywhere.
