Are You Connected? (from the premiere issue of Purpose Driven Connection, January 2009)

Small groups come in all shapes and sizes, helping each other serve God.

Rain bears against the window. Lightening splits the night sky. In a dark hole-in-the-wall club in Jacksonville, Florida, hundreds of teenagers are sweating so heavily that most of the boys are now shirtless. Onstage, Thom Green, 27-year-old lead singer of Sleeping Giant, hurls his thin, tattooed body up and dawn as the music reaches an unbearable decibel level, stoking his adoring young fans into frenzy. The scene is familiar to any hard-core punk club in America, but Green’s lyrics are not. “The worst is behind you/The best is ahead.” He sings. “No time for grieving/Time for praising God.”

Green is one of hundreds of young people who are finding remarkable ways to preach the Word of the Lord. They are often outcasts, uncomfortable in traditional churches. As the teenage stepson of a minister in Salt Lake City, Green recalls that he “hated Christians by and large; they all seemed so fake to me.” Green married at 21, had a daughter, and after a painful divorce, started a group for kids who were hurting as he was. Soon, 60 to 70 kids were filling his living room every week to talk about God, and eventually hundreds more were coming to Sleeping Giant’s concerts. “This is our church,” says Green. “We are the voices of a generation. You have to bring Jesus to kids where they are. - Readers Digest Association

Sleeping Giant

Sleeping Giant represent a great and terrible day when all living things will
return to dust; and their sound is as formidable as one might suspect the
apocalypse should be. Sleeping Giant charged onto the Redlands, CA scene in
2006 with their bold and powerful live show, where in addition to being
entranced by ominous guitars, crowds are met with burning passion
from articulate front man Thom Green. The sincerity behind the
words that pour out from Greens mouth is deeply rooted in the bands
unwavering love for The Lord.

Sleeping Giant are resolute in their goal to reach as many people as possible
with their message of repentance; but their music is anything but
single-minded. The diversity of sound on their debut Dread Champions of
the Last Days is striking, and listeners will find the bands ability to
morph seamlessly from one track to the next to be unforgettable.

We are called Sleeping Giant because Christians in the world today are just
that, in the world. And they need to wake up!!! They are sleeping giants of
war in this world over-run by people who do not see the enormity of
their sin and don't realize they live there lives day by day forsaking a just
and amazing God who deserves everything.
