"Live Review (In League Album Launch)"

There was a certain urgency and easy proficiency to Sleepwalker’s front-man George Green. He put obvious effort into each song whilst using his eyes to connect with the audience. This, combined with the natural chemistry of the band, enhanced the effect of the songs from their recently released debut, Living Dead. Their quintessential exchange of genre-pushing tracks and intense performance showed Sleepwalker to be on form, as always.

SLEEPWALKER
Living Dead
Independent

3.5

If you've been to a few shows recently you've probably caught Sleepwalker at one point or another. If so, you will have seen the local lads put on a pretty killer live show which has been admirably captured bon their debut EP, despite its pristine production. Living Dead sees the five-piece operating in the same broad, melodic alternative rock as acts like Gyroscope and Children Collide, but stick to the shadows with darker themes and heavier moments which, in fact, makes them a lot more interesting than most of their peers. Tracks such as Paper Faith and Televisionaries manage to be hard and hummable, with innovative change-ups keeping listeners hooked, while the explosive Sleepers Beware brings an unbelievably intense performance and huge chorus to make it arguably the best of the six songs on offer. Bodes well for Sleepwalker drop their full-length debut; in the meantime, check them out live if you get the chance.

"'Living Dead' EP Review"

Fresh from impressing many at their Linkin’ Park support, guitar-driven outfit Sleepwalker have a debut EP that bolts out from the blocks. Blistering title track Living Dead is an impressive, flashy, punk opener laden with duelling guitars and heavy and catchy hooks. It’s not unnecessary to say that Sleepwalker are classy as hell, they are a professional outfit. George Green’s vocals sound straight off a stage at a Soundwave tour, while the guitars effortlessly weave in and out of an unshakable and heavy back section. The recording is carefully produced but I’ve no doubt they reproduce it live. Living Dead is some very impressive stuff. As all half-decent bands should, Sleepwalker have put a lot of time and talent into their debut release. It’s dense, listenable, tight and thoughtful. Within the broad ‘heavy music’ category, these guys’ influences are evident; Paper Faith and Sleepers Beware are built on distinct At The Drive-In foundations. But, by track four, Televisionaries, Sleepwalker have defined their own sound; a loud and brash mesh of mainstream heavy rock but with all the good things that come with being technically spot-on heavy music aficionados.

"Live Review (Closure In Moscow Support)"

Putting together a super group of “Perthonalities” can be fruitful, as Birds Of Tokyo have found. It’s hard not to liken Sleepwalker to the aforementioned but thankfully the similarities end right there. Chock full of well-seasoned Perth musicians, Sleepwalker are the perfect blend of five secret herbs and spices, although the spices aren’t that secret, due to each member being super successful in their own right. Maybe a Captain Planet metaphor is a more apt description… Ex-Crysis drummer Glenn provided the heart, with earthy bass tones from Jarrad Clarke (Celladore, Hope Here Gone), whilst the fiery riffage by James Croy (Hope Here Gone) perfectly complemented the eye-watering emotional leads from guitarist Drew May-Hills (Antistatic) and the amazing wind pipes of George Green (Elora Danan). Whichever way you look at it, Sleepwalker are too fucking good.

From the moment Green persuasively told everyone to take a few steps forward, they held the near full Civic back room at attention for the duration of their set. As might be suggested by the over-the-top metaphors plaguing the last paragraph, it didn’t seem like a first performance. It was tight, entertaining and musically appealing. Finger lickin’ good music, produced with their plentiful powers combined. Punters will be eagerly awaiting a recorded effort.

"Live Review (Linkin Park Support)"

LINKIN PARK
Burswood Dome

"As no one knows who we are, I'm sure these are all pretty new," yells the vocalist of local lads Sleepwalker as he introduced a 'new' track. The comment was no exaggeration. The majority of the reasonably sized crowd gathered at the front of the stage had no idea who the band were, but that didn't stop Sleepwalker. The band rose to their challenge in fine form, delivering a tight, well-rehearsed set that fitted perfectly on the large Burswood Dome stage.

The debut EP release from this local five-piece is a meticulously produced and invigorating listen. Ambitious and expansive songwriting is coupled with precision musicianship and the resulting six tracks of progressive, hardcore rock are truly unique. Soaring and expressing vocals really drive the songs to a new level, and the unexpected twists and turns scattered throughout the songs should keep a listener riveted throughout the entire 25 minutes of Living Dead.

Bio

Formed in mid-2009, Sleepwalker is comprised of members of former Perth rock alumni Elora Danan, Antistatic and Hope Here Gone. Having cut their collective teeth together on the stages of their home town, the five piece have honed an already existing chemistry to create a sound of their own.

Locking themselves away in rehearsal spaces and project studios for 18 months before their live debut, the band emerged with a set that would become their debut EP, ‘Living Dead’: six songs of colourful, frenetic and hard-hitting modern rock.

In their short time on the scene, Sleepwalker have garnered supports alongside some of the biggest names in Australian punk, hardcore and rock, playing with the likes of Closure In Moscow, The Amity Affliction, Sugar Army, Miles Away and Break Even.

Following the successful local launch of ‘Living Dead’ in November 2010, the band has scored a number of international supports, sharing stages with Linkin Park, Senses Fail and Unwritten Law.

Currently writing a wealth of new material, the band will emerge from preproduction for select shows in April/May, before heading to the studio to begin recording an LP planned for release in late 2011.
