Subtract the weapon and jewelry that laces much of rap music, add
captivating beats and lyrics emphasizing the authenticity of the day to day, and
you have C-SUN. There is no doubt that this Atlanta-area emcee is itching for the
limelight, for it took what he describes as “blood, sweat and sacrifice” to release
the 2006 LP Long Time Comeʼn, a hiphop odyssey entailing real life battles,
determination to succeed, and the everyday celebration of the average man.
Itʼs not uncommon for the new cat on the block to puff out his chest right
out the gate. C-SUN is not short on confidence or self-promotion, opening the
LP with “S.T.T.A.K”, a quick flowing tribute to his label Small Things To A King
Entertainment, announcing it as a landmark arrival in the industry. he pace drops
entirely on “Chillin” the first cut to introduce the jazz piano and brass samples.
“Sincerely Yours” expresses a devout affinity for females as he rhymes “She the
type of eye candy / Give a married man a cavity” over a coffee shop trumpet-and-
keys piece.
The 30 -year old emcee brings in Brand X on “Word” and they tandem play
off each other nicely with infectious energy. McFly, featured as C-SUNʼs
interviewer in skits between tracks throughout the album, raps on “Jokes On U,”
a search party to expose the pretenders of the rap game.
C-SUN makes a strong move here in an effort to separate himself from the
pack, spitting what he claims is “the truth” as he lives his life and raps his
rhymes. If itʼs confidence he promotes, and not cockiness,he has plenty of it,
which, when paired with an undeniable work ethic, translates into a satisfying
hiphop album. A chef by day, in Long Time Comeʼn C-SUN has prepared a tight,
well-balanced main course garnished with head-nodding beats, purposeful
samples and commanding lyrics, and drenched in a smooth jazz vibe.
