12 Questions with Slow Riot

It's a little sad, but every once in a while (I wish it was more often) I hear a band from St. Louis and go, "Holy shit, these guys are amazing!" Slow Riot is one of those bands. Their sounds screams of influences from two of my favorite bands of all time, Ours and Dredg. I found myself going to their myspace page and jamming their songs, a lot. And on top of it, they are fans of the site. However, I must point out, I contacted THEM. In a world where mainstream rock and artistic integrity are often considered mutually exclusive and scene starlets can devote as much time to handicapping sub-genres as to perfecting their craft, Slow Riot's sound is a breath of fresh air. After coming to life as a songwriting project in the St. Louis studio of vocalist / bassist Mark Grilliot and drummer Benjamin Pitts, the group began to gain local recognition for its' sharp musical wit and grandiose rock hooks. The band played a series of successful shows as a trio before recruiting two out of state transplants (guitarists Shaun Kilman and Jesse Flatte) to assist with a more fully realized sound. The result is an amalgamation of arena ready bombast and buzz-bin ambience that appeals to the listener's intellect without underestimating their capacity for unabashed rock and roll exuberance.
