Slug

BandBluesJazz

Acoustic Singer- Songwriting duo who also cover Jazz and Blues in an idiosyncratic style. "Tracks of the Slug", our first album, has created waves amongst many influential proffessionals. The quirky lyrics and memorable melodies have already been used by a film company for short promotional films.

Biography

Slug is the result. But how did we get there?

Sometimes the desire to make music grows into something more.

David wanted to make music so he brought along his Double Bass, not because he was a Bassist. At the time he wasn’t. He just thought he’d like to be, and as fate would have it, it appears that he is. Alan wanted to make music, not because he never has, but because he just loves it. Like most bands do, Slug started out as a covers band. But only very briefly, and for a while they weren’t even called Slug.

Then, during one of those slightly lost periods, Alan played David one of his own compositions. That went well. David didn’t write songs. He wrote tunes. Melodies, but without words. They played the tunes. David opened up his little notebook of jottings. It contained fragmented sentences. Hang on! Whole sentences. These words fitted those tunes. Songs.

So now we had two songwriters.

Not that any of the songs here are recorded exactly as they were written. Alan finds it hard to follow things note for note. Years of being a solo artist have freed him of the ability to follow songs through from start to finish in precisely the same manner each time. The up shot of this is that a two bar intro might become an eight bar intro. Or the third and fourth verses may swap places, or one may be dropped. And as for the words, well, the meaning remains the same even though Alan sang them slightly differently. But that’s okay. Anyway, once David had gotten used to Alan’s slightly odd way of ‘counting in’, and provided he could see what Alan was playing, it was a thumbs-up situation

Bank Account

Written By: Alan John Springate

Something ‘bout the way you’re talking
Takin’ money right out of my pocket
Wish I could put a lock and a chain around
All that’s left inside my bank account

Years that I’ve been told
They say your money’s (wisdom’s) worth its weight in gold
Wish I could take all you’ve told me, I would pawn the lot
Get back a least a half of what listening to you has cost me

Don’t you squander what I have
It’s got to take me through to my old age
But every word that drops from your mouth
Takin’ money from my bank account

Can’t allow myself to be taken in by your gift
You say your plans are water-tight
But I don’t want to sail on that ship
For every penny I give you, you say you’re gonna hand me back a pound
Your credit rating’s up
My interest in this is falling down

Can’t allow myself to be taken in by your gift
You say your plans are water-tight
But I don’t want to sail on that ship
For every penny I give you, you say you’re gonna hand me back a pound
Your credit rating’s up
My interest in this is falling down

There’s something ‘bout the way you talk
Takin’ money right from my pocket
I’m gonna put a lock and a chain around
All that’s left inside my bank account

Don’t you squander what I have
It’s got to see me through to my winter years
Listen close, can you hear the sound
That’s my ever deflating bank account

Sleep (don't come easy)

Written By: Alan John Springate

3 a.m. on a Wednesday
And I’m still looking for a sign
My head is filled with all the stupid things that I hold dear
Sleep just don’t come easy

Well I’m waiting on the morning
I’d love to hear your voice
The moon looks beautiful, the stars they shine
Sleep just don’t come easy

Shouldn’t allow these thoughts to crawl round in my head
Love’s a dangerous thing
I get locked into just wanting you more and more
Sleep don’t come easy
Sleep don’t come easy

Well it’s so dark here in my room
And I can’t seem to close my eyes
No, I’m just wired into reaching out for you
Sleep just don’t come easy

Never allow these thoughts to race round in your head
Wishes are dangerous things
And I get locked into the folds and I want more
Sleep don’t come easy
Sleep don’t come easy

Well it’s well after 3 a.m. now
And baby I can’t close my eyes
With all the stupid things I keep inside my head
You know sleep don’t come easy

Ghost in the Corner

Written By: Alan John Springate

Well I’m the ghost in the corner
Hear me wailing and moaning ‘bout everything
Seems I wasted my good time
Waiting for a girl like you then I fade as so as you step in

Count your blessings before midnight
Cross yourself if you believe in all that stuff
You’ll find me out in the moonlight
Well I’m lookin’ for something that I’ve already found

Well I’m the ghost in the corner
Hear me wailing and moaning, I’m rattling my chains
I locked myself up tightly
Into this mess you see, d’you hear I’m howling and I’m deranged

Why don’t you all join hands?
You could try to contact me
Bring a bell, book and candle
You can sit in the dark. You could try to set me free

Well I’m the ghost in the corner
Hear me wailing and moaning, rattling my bones
Mostly lonely and unnoticed
I don’t think anyone knows how long I’ve been gone

Loose Change

Written By: Alan John Springate

Loose change
Only thing I ever need
Loose change
Always running out on me

When I’m trying to feed the meter
And my hands are digging deep
But I can’t find anything but dust
Loose change

Loose change
Cross my palm but soon you’re gone
Loose change
Desire lingers on

Well I’m trying to buy a paper
And my hands are digging deep
But I can’t find anything but dust
Loose change

Well you say that I’ve got folding
I can’t drop that in the slot
Loose change
Well I know that I’ve got plastic
I can’t chuck that in his hat
Loose change

Loose change
Has the penny finally dropped?
Loose change
One thing I need that I ain’t got

Veronica Says

Written By: Alan John Springate

Veronica says if the phone rings she’s not here
Veronica stares in the mirror, fixes her hair
Then she smoothes out every trace
Memories she keeps, evidence erased
Veronica says

Veronica keeps her cool as she plays it down
Veronica says they’re always trying to flush her out
The whole world’s on her case
And everyone knows but no one will say it to her face
Veronica says

Veronica says
Do you see what Veronica sees?
Veronica says
Do you hear what Veronica hears?

Veronica’s in love, but sometimes she’s not
Veronica needs you less, then she wants you more
Just a little space to breathe
She looks for the signs other women would see
Veronica says

It’s hard to know just what Veronica means
Well I know she’s fooling someone and someone’s fooling me
She’s too busy now to play
And it’s hard to disagree when Veronica see things this way

Veronica says
Do you see what Veronica sees?
Veronica says
Do you hear what Veronica hears?

Veronica says if the phone rings she’s not here

Why Can't I Wake Up

Written By: Alan J Springate

Well you wake me up; it’s the middle of the night
Pulling on the covers but I’m hanging on tight
Why can’t I wake up any other way than this?

My alarm clock calls, but I sleep right through
My mobile’s buzzing, but I miss that too
Why can’t I wake up any other way than this?

Get a bucket of water. Pour it over my head
Well I’m so sound asleep you could think that I was dead
Get me coffee, sweet, black and strong
Well I’d sleep right through if my house fell down

My radio’s yakking, but I don’t hear a word
Well you’re jumping on my bed. I can’t be disturbed
Why can’t I wake up any other way than this?

Got a lumpy mattress but I sleep in spite
I’ve got a dog that howls in the new day light
Why can’t I wake up any other way than this?

Get a bucket of water. Pour it over my head
Well I’m so sound asleep, babe you could think that I was dead
Get me coffee, sweet, black and strong
Well I’d sleep right through if my house fell down

Get a bucket of water. Pour it over my head
Well I’m so sound asleep, babe you could think that I was dead
I need coffee, sweet, black and strong
Well I’d sleep right through if my house fell down
