Smoke & Flowers is two girls who probably grew up getting yelled at for daydreaming in piano class. Brooklyn residents Jeanann Dara and Marisol Limon make music that reveals a deep respect for classical arrangements, but also a playful curiosity with modernity and all its loops & sampling. Musically, they sound a bit like Andrew Bird’s complicated symphonies, mixed in with a bit of Victoria Legrand’s throaty vocals, and maybe some downtempo Tom Tom Club dance beats thrown in to liven things up a bit. In their own words, they “explore the boundaries of romance and reality that could be described as electronic chamber pop.” Listen for yourself at their Bandcamp page and check ‘em out in the Lower East Side… - Audyssey Presents

Brooklyn ladies Jeanann Dara and Marisol Limon of Smoke & Flowers came across the bridge to open it up with their symphonic scope. Their music sounds like a long friendship bracelet braided in with synth, live samplings, vocals, a viola, and keys. Dressed in girl-ish vintage with touches of galactic goth, the girls look like Tim Burton space dolls but deliver a hearty vocal harmony that sounds like the perfect soundtrack to a warm New York summer night, sitting on a fire escape facing the night skyline and smoking cigarettes until heat hits the fingers. Romantic and enchanting, they closed out their set with a flood of viola that vibrated through to the very fine hairs on the back of the neck. - Audyssey Presents: The Neighborhood
Smoke & Flowers are are a lovely duo that create “electronic chamber pop”. Listen to their EP on bandcamp. Kyle Boyd tracked some of the EP at Headgear in February of 2011... - Headgear Recording, Brooklyn
Smoke & Flowers is a collaboration between Jeanann Dara and Marisol Limon. They blend genres musically and explore the boundaries of romance and reality in a style that could be described as electronic chamber pop. The Brooklyn-based duo performs with the instrumentation of vocals, keys, synthesizer, viola, drums, and live sampling. Jeanann and Marisol combine their background in the classical arts with pop culture and poetic lyricism. They share vocal and instrumental duties, with Limon on piano and synthesizer, Dara on viola and live sampler, and a rotating cast on drums. Their four-song EP Smoke & Flowers was just released. I strongly suggest you pick it up. It will definitely enchant you as it has this old geezer. - The Brooklyn Rail

Bio
Marisol met Jeanann in the Brooklyn music scene, as they were both recording and performing with mutual colleagues and doing their individual music projects. After playing solo sets at a show at Zebulon in Williamsburg, Brooklyn last year, Jeanann played viola on Marisol's solo EP. Shortly after, they decided to join forces and genres, thus forming Smoke & Flowers.
Born in Alabama, raised in Houston and LA, Jeanann grew up playing and performing viola & violin with world class performing artists. Marisol is a pianist, writer and visual artist from San Antonio, Texas who studied Art History, and did classical piano studies at the Manhattan School of Music; she has exhibited and performed, toured and recorded internationally. Jeanann is a graduate of The Juilliard School, where she started working with electronics and then traveled, toured and premiered her solo works, with symphonies and ensembles worldwide.
Jeanann & Marisol have performed, toured and recorded with the following artists: Matthew Hemerlein, Chris Garneau, Scott Matthew, Devo Springstein, Nick Zinner, Hisham Akira Bharoocha, Matt Mondanile, Bang on a Can, Patrick Bower & the World Without Magic, Luke Top, and have played festivals including the Montreux Jazz Festival, Way Out West Festival (Sweden), Donau Festival (Austria), Theatron Pfingstfestival, Haldern Pop Festival, on3 Festival (Germany), Primavera Sound Festival (Spain).
Influenced and inspired by their diverse musical experiences, both Marisol & Jeanann began composing and singing their own songs. With Smoke & Flowers, the two artists are interested in integrating their poetic lyricism, academic & classical backgrounds with electronic sounds and popular culture. With their visual arts background, they have created films to accompany their live performances. These can be seen in clips of their live shows below.
