Bio

Hailing from Yancey County, NC, "Smokey Joe" Peoples has been writing and performing songs for over thirty years. Those who have seen him perform; delight in his folksy, melodic voice and harmonic guitar playing. The content of his songs often make an audiance laugh, cry and feel many emotions in between.
Smokey Joe's career as a singer-songwriter began in 1983 as the primary creative force behind the Wisteria String Band out of Pensacola, FL. Peoples wrote the majority of the original music the Wisteria String Band presented and all that it recorded. The band's recording, "Rollin On" was released in 1991. In addition, the Wisteria String Band was the house band for Florida Pubilc Radio's W.U.W.F. Radio Live program "On The Road" for over four years. Along with their busy public radio schedule, the band performed at many festivals and events throughout the Southeast. These include The Florida Folk Festival in White Springs, Fl and The City Lights Festival in Nashville, TN. The band went on to be nominated for "String Band of The Year" at the prestigious Spbgma Convention in Nashville, TN.
Currently, Smokey Joe is still writing uniquely original songs. Most recently he was commissioned by Florida Public Radio - W.U.W.F to write a song for public radio fundraising. The song he wrote "Opus 99" is being sent all over the country to be played for other public radio fundraisers as well. His band, "The Smokey Joe Show" performed at various venues throughout 2005-2006. These include The Flat Rock Music Festival in Flat Rock, NC, The Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival in Pensacola, FL, The Frank Brown International Song-Writer's Festival in Alabama/Florida, The Hickory BBQ Festival in Hickory, NC, The Blue Bar in Nashville, TN, and The Town Pump in Black Mountain, NC.
