"A Ska Band? Who the F*ck Listens to Ska?"

Where I am, it seems as if ska still has a ways before it disappears entirely. The local music store has allowed the practice session of some very popular bands that were able to bring in the local school age population.

I'm not sure if it's their charisma, their loads of energy, or just their ability to have some good clean fun, but these kids from SMS are, for lack of a better word, awesome.

I actually conducted photo sessions and had an interview with them a several months back. This was in the works for awhile, we had to make sure our schedules matched so that we can actually meet, it was difficult since Roderos was the also the only who could drive and she was out of the country at that point in time.

- To Scrutiny Like a Fool (Lourdes Villalta)

"Youth ska band shares passion for music"

It's the energy. The adrenaline rush. The knowledge that they are about to rock the audience's and their own worlds.
for six 15- 16- and 18-year-olds in the Oak Harbor band SMS, music is what brings harmony and thrill to their lives. Music brought them together and served as a release for sorrow when they were forced apart. Music transformed passing friendship into deep bonds and turns performance nights into "music parties." ...
Members of SMS built a stage at Click Music in a large sized garage from when the facility was a ship building operation. The band set up a concert, which more than 60 people attended, and then used the proceeds to buy lumber (for the new building of Click Music)...
While their songs embrace a variety of themes, some of the unhappy lyrics hold the most meaning. ...
Higashiyama said he grew up listening to ska...he explained the differences between Jamaican, British and American ska music, which the band mixes and draws from while maintaining its own one-of-a-kind sound.
- Whidbey Times

Bio

SMS is a band influenced by a lot of the big names, such as Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto, The Specials, Less Than Jake, and many more. However, even with such influences we maintain our own unique sounds that make us who we are. "Diversity" is what sets us apart from other bands. Our songs can go as far as containing the elements of jazz, while having the intensity of metal. Each musician in our band contributes to the band as a whole with their own unique style. For example: Our drummer has many metal influences, (he likes his double bass pedal) our horn players love the sounds of jazz, and our guitar and bass players enjoy punk rock riffs and what not; thus the song "Get Over It" was born (see GET OVER IT on our EPK) "Get over it" however is just one mere example of our song making and style. We will continue to produce our music and will proceed to bring an epic show to whoever we may play for. Every time.
