"Lovable Midwestern rock from Brooklyn"

Smyer: Crooked Tigers
by Jason MacNeil

Listening to the opening moments of Smyer, or even during the terrific and exuberant title track, the thought of a young Paul Westerberg and younger Tommy Stinson comes to mind. “Cherry Chapstick” is a lovable little Midwestern rock gem despite the fact this band is from New York. Go figure. Nonetheless “Cadillac” is another strong pop song (think Afghan Whigs) that bobs and weaves thanks to some great work from the guitar and rhythm section. The intensity and soulfulness of the album comes through with every song, whether it’s the winding “Late Night” or the run-of-the-mill “F Song” which doesn’t drop any F-bombs. Smyer rarely drop the ball or add filler to the proceedings, this despite the fact two five-minute numbers including “Last Car Leaving” are plopped in the middle of the album. There are several standouts here as Smyer don’t reinvent the wheel musically, just put some spit and polish on the hubcaps with “A Million Faces” (again think Afghan Whigs) and the airtight “Soul Crusher” and the dated-dubbed “Reaganomics”. - PopMatters

Smyer- Crooked Tigers

Smyer. Hehe. Funny name eh? Bands name is a place in Texas so I can only assume thats where they were from before they moved to Manhattan. Their page labels them as Alternative but I think I can find another word for it. Spoonish. If you like Spoon I can guarantee that you will enjoy Smyer. They are relatively unknown and actually put their CD out for free so heres your chance to get yourself on the cool train and know a band before anyone else. Trust me, you'll enjoy them.

Bio

More hooks than a tackle box. A manic rhythm like a steamroller. A smokescreen of visceral guitar licks and disjointed memoirs dwelling on the brilliance of luscious insanity and surviving the tightrope of way too much, skating over puddles of spilt milk and urban decay on a good day. Way too much. They've got glitter for the girls and guitars for the guys. Smyer will be your girlfriend's favorite rock band.

Brian and Gordon started playing together in a band in Austin, Texas called the Ampersandersons, but Gordon soon realized that he was not a very good drummer and then other members moved away, and Brian and Gordon both moved to Los Angeles. In LA they recruited their friend Kirby Smith, and met another fellow Texan Jeph Duarte who played drums and started gigging as Smyer. After getting sick of Los Angeles, Brian, Gordon, and Jeph all left LA and without planning all ended up in Brooklyn where they recruited Gabe Berezin, a great guitarist and songwriter from the band Monuments, to play the bass. They have just finished their first full-length album, Crooked Tigers, and are currently working on new material for a 2008 release.
