Biography

Snailhouse is an ongoing collection of songs by Montreal based artist Mike Feuerstack. Half singer-songwriter, half experimental guitar player - Feuerstack is in love with words and music and how they play together. Over the course of 5 albums and an EP, Snailhouse has earned a very loyal following all over the underground music world.

Snailhouse's last record, the Jeremy Gara produced Lies on the Prize was widely acclaimed (including a Polaris nomination) for its panoramic and literate musicality.

At once classic and inventive, the unique song-craft and sensibility listeners come to expect from Snailhouse takes genres both new and old and weaves them into something that can never be listened to the same way twice.

In 2008, "Do You want to Talk All Night? - A Sappy Records Tribute to Snailhouse" was released, on which many of Feuerstack's peers and fans in other bands (among them Maritime, The Acorn and Rick White) performed versions of Snailhouse songs.

Feuerstack was also a founding member art-rock band Wooden Stars, who were awarded a Juno for best alternative album for their collaboration with Julie Doiron, titled Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars.

Mike can also be found offering his guitar and lap steel skills to the ear bending Bell Orchestre (Juno Winners, Polaris nominees) and the heartbreaking folk of Angela Desveaux.

Snailhouse music has featured contributors as diverse and renowned as Julie Doiron, Dave Draves, Angela Desveaux, members of Arcade Fire, Wintersleep, Bell Orchestre, Maritime and The Acorn - to name a few.
selected press for snailhouse

The lyrics on their own are lovely but they attain sublime status due to how the music envelops and caresses them, framing them perfectly. ... add in the weeping strings, the plaintive guitar and Feuerstack’s pining voice and you’ve got perfection. Forget lies, the hidden truth makes this music the real winner. - Chris Whibbs, Exclaim!

Feuerstack has the age and experience to write with a mature voice where pessimism and harsh realism never surrender entirely to cynicism... These lucky 13 tracks comprise the most underrated Canadian album of 2008... With an album this timeless, however, it's never too late to catch up. - Michael Barclay, Guelph Mercury

Steering clear of any arena bluster or faddish gimmicks, Feuerstack finds a stealthy way to give ’er like a cream-of-the crop singer-songwriter. His pretty and poignant songs about the (somewhat) simple things—love, homesickness, the sun—flow with ease, bolstered by the subtlest of strings and horns and keys. - Lorraine Carpenter, Montreal Mirror

As befits such a talented and unpredictable guitarist, Feuerstack – who played most of the instruments himself, with drum, keyboard, recording and mixing assistance from Arcade Fire's Jeremy Gara – doesn't use going a bit "pop" as an excuse to simplify his arrangements or the instrumentation. Nearly every tune has a few weird angles and shady corners to ponder in the weeks and, in all likelihood, months to come. Now more than ever, Snailhouse would appear ready for its spotlight. - Ben Rayner, The Star

... Feuerstack lives in the songs of Snailhouse. Songs that detail life's failing and triumphs in the most delightful way. Songs that reflect the ever-evolving project of a kind, gentle and funny artist not content to play it safe. - Allan Wigney, Ottawa Sun

Lies on the Prize is the best representation of Feuerstack’s songwriting gifts. He composes slyly earnest lyrics, where sincere romanticism mingles effectively with playful black humour, and he marries these to unique soundtracks on what is ultimately an intricate guitar/voice record.

Lyrics

(Not) Superstitious

Written By: Michael Feuerstack

When you look into the darkness you're looking in my eyes
Wiping off the knife before the blood has time to dry
Oh oh oh oh oh

If you're blurry at the edges you're gonna get some bleed
Like visiting the animals and hogging all the feed
Oh oh oh oh oh

I think I've really lost myself

If you don't for the money or you do it for the love
They're gonna dust for fingerprints they're gonna drag the lake
Oh oh oh oh oh

Taking what you want and leaving what you don't
Can't look them in the eyes until you've got them by the throat
Oh oh oh oh oh

I think I've really lost myself

I know what you're thinking dear
Do you wanna know what it is?
Come close I'll whisper in your ear

I'm not superstitious but I'm not not superstitious
I'm not superstitious but I'm not not superstitious

Dollar Signs

Written By: Michael Feuerstack

I woke up this morning with dollar signs in my eyes
I get so much done with my eyes on the prize
Everybody knows it can't be good to spend all your money on what you should

I woke up this morning with razor blades in my ears
Something so familiar, are you reeling in the years?
I try to make sense of the voice I heard, a beautiful mosquito or an ugly bird

Burn all your bridges
Shake that thing
This is how we overthrow the king

All around the castle
We overturn the soil
Set free all the horses and fill the moat with oil
So burn all your bridges
Shake that thing
This is how we overthrow the king

Tone Deaf Birds

Written By: Michael Feuerstack

Bore me, tell me things I already know
Tell me one more time before I go to sleep basking in your voice rich and sweet

Tone deaf, tone deaf birds sing anyway
Tone deaf, tone deaf birds sing anyway
It's cold at night
You sing yourself to sleep that's why you wake up tired

Poor me, they sell me things I don't really need
But tone deaf birds sing anyway

Born in the City

Written By: Michael Feuerstack

Born in the city, the blue and the grey
It makes me feel like a kid again to wander in this way
So I picture myself as a baby at 35 years old
In a basket on your doorstep starving and cold
But when I'm old and withered what will they say?
"He was kind gentle and funny but he played it safe"

For one night, the procession of us in the limelight
It's not right
Lighting up fires without torch songs
It's not right

The matchmaker makes up the matches
The matches give us our flames
Going to peoples' parties the court and spark is the same

The icebreaker makes conversation
The icemaker freezes our drinks
The dance floor shakes our assets and our expectations sink

For one night, the procession of us in the limelight
It's not right
Lighting up fires without torch songs
It's not right

Homesick

Written By: Michael Feuerstack

Homesick pretender I remember your name
It rolls off my tongue like the cascading rain
It echos and murmurs and brings me new shame
Homesick I remember your name

When you finished school you started to roam
On buses and couches you forgot your home
Through city and country you sought to learn
Homesick to never return

Soon someone you love will give you a choice
Do or don't, but you can't undo what's been done
Homesick you're forgetting someone

When you were a baby you always would cry
Whenever your mother would sing you good-bye
Now vibrations lull you as you roll along
Homesick that's only a song

Soon someone you love will give you a choice
Do or don't, but you can't undo what's been done
Homesick you're forgetting someone
