Last night Tucson's own Snakes In Love took the stage, err.. floor to bring their special brand of sweaty, scotch soaked(classy!)gutter-glam to Famous Sam's. And it was DAMN good! As has been my experience in seeing them twice in a week. Before a note was ever played, guitarist John Bujak warned the crowd, made up mostly of people there to see AC/DC tribute act, Dirty Deeds, Vinyl Scream(Bujak played guitar in all three groups) and random barfly regulars, that, "This ain't for the NASCAR crowd. This is a glam-punk band!"Then they launched, and I do mean Launched, into their cover of the Stooges' 'Search & Destroy' Followed by ace Snakes original, 'I Wanna Live', T. Rex's '20th Century Boy'then.. another Snakes original, 'Median Paper Boy' due to be posted on the group's myspace mid-week. Throughout the entire gig the rhythm section of drummer Mark Bolen, bassist Marty Haviik, remained mute(as usual) but Javier (singer)and John kept up the banter, telling everyone what a spectacular gig they missed @ Maloney's last Saturday, where Snakes in Love opened for punk legend Sylvain Sylvain(of the New York Dolls) John recounted how backstage, while struggling to pull his boots on, Syl suggested he should, "Use baby powdah!" He and Javier commented on how they were at least shocked and at most scarred for life upon seeing Syl in his purple undies! If one of their awesome covers makes it on to Snakes in Loves' debut album, tentatively titled, "Sex, Scotch & Rock n' Roll" it should be their version of the Ziggy-era, Bowie/Ronson classic, 'Suffragette City'. First of all.. you don't see it coming. It's rockin' And poppy, they make it their own while still staying true to the original, I could go on.. but in short, it's played fucking perfectly! A brief bit of conversation about John's girly(but quite nice) black shirt, Javier's tight black jeans(no tighter than mine but hey..) and a bit of alcohol consumption/promotion then their closer, Ted 'Uncle Ted' Nugent's 'Motor City Madhouse' near the end of which, Mark finally spoke up, "Rock n' fuckin' roll!"All in all another great, if brief, Snakes In Love show.
Word around the campfire is the Snakes will be heading off to Europe and/or Japan some time in the near future. I personally think... they'd kill in the UK @ places like the Star & Garter, Nottingham Rock City and the Hope & Anchor pub(both in England) France will be iffy but Germany and Japan will get snake-bit and love it! We wish nothing but the best of luck to them! Until next time..

Syl Sylvain, Snakes in Love, Broken Romeo: post-show

Well, I guess I was half right in my last blog posting. Syl had intentions of mixing it up with Dolls 'hits', obscure Dolls tracks, Johnny Thunders songs and the like.. BUT the other guitarist's amp went out before they got to the best bits, "Private World", "Jet Boy" & "Trash" which reeeeally disappointed me! It wasn't their fault that the amp blew BUT they could've gone on with just Syl playing guitar or borrowed an amp from someone else or SOMETHING! What they DID play was reeeally good. Syl was in top form and his band were some excellent young players. And to be in the presence of a legend such as Sylvain Sylvain almost irreversably warped my brain. I got some good pics(I was pressed up against the stage for the whole gig) 2 guitar picks, a drumstick & 3 setlists from Sylvain & the Ugly Americans. I got a chance to talk to him for a couple of minutes after the show, he talked about the photo on the inside gatefold of his latest LP and the fur shop they were standing in front of in it and how they were allowed to raid the iron doored vault in said shop which was full of leathers, furs, guitars & other glam-era goodies(talk about a velvet goldmine!) I also got him to sign a setlist for me, which was wayy rad, but I can't help feeling that they could've done more to finish their set. It was 4 songs short at least.(They didn't play the songs in the order in which they appeared on the setlist other than the opener, 'The Cops Are Coming' and skipped over a cpl BEFORE the tech. difficulties began)
The first openers, 'Broken Romeo' were a decent 4-piece band(w/ 2 guitars, the singer also playing guitar) w/ a different-ish cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" but nothing to write home about.
The group after them though, 'Snakes in Love' were quite good. They haven't been together that long, though they've been in diff bands for years, these guys, consisting of.. Marty Haviik on bass, formerly of 'Spiders & Snakes', Mark Bolen on drums, singer Javier Garcell & last but certainly not least, Vinyl Scream guitarist, John Bujak, can really kick out the jams. In between SIL originals they played inspired covers of the Stooges' "Search & Destroy" T. Rex's "20th Century Boy" & David Bowie's "Suffragette City" amongst others. The last of which, with Bujak's playing, is the closest thing you're likely to ever get to seeing Mick Ronson tear it up.(Ronson died in 1993 of liver cancer) I highly recommend seeing them, if for that reason alone. And you Can see them this coming weekend. They're playing a free show @ Famous Sam's, here in Tucson, this Saturday w/ Bujak's other group, Vinyl Scream & AC/DC tribute act, Dirty Deeds. Again...it's FREE, so you've no excuse not to go, go, go!

"SNAKES IN LOVE" are the multitalented musicians/artists known for their catchy hooks, unassuming lyrics, and rock till you drop concerts. Shrouded in a sense of mystery from the name of the group to the band members themselves.
"SNAKES IN LOVE" creates music that goes beyond what is expected from an (PUNK, BIG ROCK! HARD ROCK!) band of this new millinium, while not being afraid to experiment and push the envelope. Snakes In Love are known for their do it yourself ethic, and continue to grow as writers, musicians, producers, and performers (that continues to influence fans around the world). With Vocalist & guitarist -John Bujak, bassist -Marty Haviik, drummer -James Edwards, and guitarist -Iain Bujak, it is sure guarantee that there will not be a dull moment with this new band.
"SNAKES IN LOVE" means absolutely nothing....Sorta! "It's 90 percent completely arbitrary (for no reason)," and 10% "Spiders and Snakes" laughs bassist Marty Haviik. "When I decided to form a brand new band, it wasn't a for sure idea until I saw a friend at a Misfits show. We talked for hours almost missing the show completely. I didn't put too much thought into the name. "SNAKES IN LOVE" just came natural. We only cared about having a good time, writing good songs, and having fun, far more than coming up with some symbolic, incredibly intelligent name." "I think its funny when bands scramble their brains to try and come up with some unique, untouchable band name (hence me in the past)," "Why waste time thinking of something when the band could be concentrating on music instead? Friends loved it, so I went with it."
For a band that has always found inspiration in authenticity originality, and a DIY ethic, getting back to that place what a rock band is all about, was essential to getting back to basics -making sense and having fun. Their ability to fuse different musical styles along with creativity contributed by each band member, and present "SNAKES IN LOVE".. with unlimited opportunities for writing, composing, and performing. This "do-what-we-feel" approach to song-writing and recording captures the kind of jamming and improvising that happens when musicians become keenly tuned in to one another.
What next for the band? "SNAKES IN LOVE" is currently writing new material. The music will be geared closer to a Rock/Punk/Glam sound. A great first chapter in "SNAKES IN LOVE" bands career. But, to be sure, with Marty Haviik, John Bujak, Iain Bujak, and James Edwards, it is the first chapter in the story of a band that promises to be around for a long, long time. No matter what!
