"Sobriquet to release second EP at the Replay tonight"

Sobriquet has been making sweet, alternative rock tunes since 2009. The band is preparing to release its second EP, Hello Fragmented Sky, tonight at the Replay.

We recently spoke with vocalist Doug Wooldridge about the band's home studio in Lawrence.

The Pitch: How many releases do you guys have?

Doug Wooldridge: Sobriquet has released three CDs total, but the current configuration of members has released two albums. Everything Ends is our older EP, and Hello Fragmented Sky is the new album out. Several of the tracks from both can be found at our SoundCloud.

Plans for later this year, next year?

Our plans for now really just include trying to write new music and expand regionally. We're trying to gear up for a summer tour, but not before playing more in Kansas City.

Anything special planned for the release?

As far as special things for the release, we will be playing the new CD in its entirety, as well as several brand-new songs to unleash. We are lucky to be able to play with the Louisiana Street Band who recently were chosen as national winners of the U Rock! Battle for the Best Band, and Panda Circus, winners of KJHK's Farmer's Ball 2011. It will be a good night to be at the Replay Lounge.

Can you tell us a bit about the new album and the recording process?

We recorded and engineered Hello Fragmented Sky in our home studio in Lawrence. Although we set our own pace, we finished recording in about a month, and then mixed it down in Chicago with a good friend of ours, Jeff Gary. Another one of our friends, Long Chou, did all of the album artwork, and it turned out beautifully.

We spent some serious time soundproofing our basement, and fortunately avoided getting any noise complaints. However, most times we were recording very late. Sometimes being slap-happy gets you the best takes. Overall, Hello Fragmented Sky is a snapshot of the hectic lives we led over the past year, and the lyrics and emotions reflect both our individual tribulations and the social issues everyone deals with these days.

Bio

Sobriquet is a 4-member indie band from Lawrence, KS. Formed in 2006 through mutual friendships, each of the members already possessed strong individual musicianship. Years of extensive experience (over 20 tour markets and 40 shows per year under their belt), and those individual talents contribute greatly to the end result.

Sobriquet's aesthetic is large, cinematic, and rich with lyricism (their recent release, Kids of The Night, is a tapestry of movement), They show expansive range in both topic and style; political activism balanced with sensuality or even light-hearted material, acoustic ballads that somehow mesh with heavy rock, or augmented time signature and tempo. What's more, Sobriquet is prolific. The band has barely half of their written material recorded at this point, and they're continuously writing new material (40+ songs).

It's no wonder with the combined talent and tenacious activity of this band that there is strong demand for live performances. Sobriquet plays regularly in their hometown market (Lawrence, Kansas City), headlining club plays. They're also a warm and engaging opening act. Sobriquet put together their own tour through Midwestern markets in late 2012 and are positioned to make the jump to the national stage.
