… Social Espionage walks a very thin line, and they walk it well. In less masterful hands things like lights and projectors, Laptops and drum machines, mixed with drum-kits, guitars and effect heavy vocals would be the recipe for disaster but where others have tried and failed they succeed. - ghanigautama.com

"...like a wind-up music box, pulled out of a mildewed, misspent youth. Leading in with lamentation and ending with defiance. [...] a wrestling match of conceived destiny vs. raw willpower." - dPulse Europe, SEPT 2010

Hip hop is never cut and dried. Neither is life, and maybe that's what makes the beat driven soul searching on this album not only highly acceptable, but challenging and charmingly introspective. Lyrically driven, the 14 tracks here are focused but not narrow minded, lamenting on lives lost but not yet gone, constantly asking why but not expecting the hard truth because it could be infinite. This approach works well with the densely layered production, caking organ on top of piano and turntables, slamming (real)drums into tastefully noodled electric guitar. It's this diversity and finesse that is missing from so much hip hop today, and it's what allows the songs here to sit so far away from each other but remain in the same room. I'd go so far as to call these guys Urban Dance Squad for the double zeros, but I don't know if anyone remembers them. Eh, too late, I already said it. - CDbaby.com

Anytime rap music steps into something people consider "out of the norm", people are quick to place a tag on it to make it accessible. Social Espionage may be one of those groups that fall into that "out of the norm" corner, which in truth is fine since they do not hold back from embracing electronic beats with real instrumentation, as they do on Clean Air Campaign (Substance Theory). "Head Hop" sounds a bit like Mike Shinoda's Fort Minor project, while "Human Nature" sounds like they stopped on the side of the road to pick up some beer from Stereolab.

It is a very adventurous listen, one that people may resist at first because it is hip-hop from a very different perspective, but it is one that works quite well.

-John Book, musicforamerica.org // okayplayer.com - MusicForAmerica.org, March 2007

"...Social Espionage is representative of what's next in Atlanta."

-Brian Knott, ATF Records, CEO - Creative Loafing, March 2006

"Eschewing image for passion, Social Espionage consistently delivers an engaging sonic tapestry that touches anyone who listens. Kontent & the crew expertly weave live instrumentation, turntablism, and electronics into rewarding soundscapes punctuated by intelligent lyrics."

-Matt Simpson, WREK 91.1 fm
"the Mobius" dj, Nophi Recordings
- Sonic Alchemist, December 2006

“...These aren’t your traditional love songs and there’s no mention of any Cadillac on dubs. This is a different kind of love and self-realization. This is about independence.”

-Ashley Hundsdorfer in reference to
Social Espionage
- The Technique, Oct 2006

With elements that run the gamut from angry distortion to an addictive dream-scape of melody, Social Espionage is rooted by a strong focus on cutting edge audio production. Genres are eschewed for a free form expression centered around unique sound manipulation amplified by heavy effects and a fresh take on composition. The group began as an idea born from experimentation, gradually elevating under the hands of Mike Mosca and his precise brand of song craft. The angst driven cadence and harrowing voices coming from frontman, Lucas Ogden continue with a format of adaptation, seemingly evolving alongside the instrumentation. Each piece of music grows from start to finish through spontaneous reconstruction of organic audio coupled with the calculated edits of computer sequencing, creating a truly original pallet of recordings. Anchored in documentation, this collective is ultimately an extension of the impressions that it's creators have developed through skewed views of the outside world. It is this reflection of reality that is seen in Social Espionage and the eyes of their creative nuance. A mask on the face of the actual, expressed upon sonic canvas.
