Social Stitch

Social Stitch

BandRockSinger/Songwriter

It begins with a song...a broke-down beat and a souped up Cadillac of a guitar...some of its happy and some of its sad, some of its groovy and some of its mad.

Biography

The name Social Stitch comes from the idea of trying to stitch society together through positive music. Although some of our music may be a bit dark, the end in site is definitely positive. Struggles with depression and drug abuse have lead the primary songwriter to create songs that tell a dark story of life and an ending that hopes to inspire love and light to all who listen.

Mike Beck is trained in Drums and Percussion form Slippery Rock University. Elwood Brant is a classically trained pianist who graduated from Duquesne University with a degree in music education. J. Shields wrote his first song at the age of 12 and has been writing ever since. He graduated from Robert Morris University with a degree in Business, although he still doesn't remember how or why...

Lyrics

Rotten World

Written By: J. Shields

Verse I
When you called me
Was there anything you wanted to say?
You couldn’t tell me
Without the tears rolling down your cheeks?
I think you want me
To just pretend and try and live my life
When you are lonely
It’s just a feeling and it will subside

Verse II
You’re feeling lost now
Like a rat stuck inside a maze
When you don’t know how
To hide a feeling that you can’t erase
It’s your world now
But you’ll never let them see your face
‘Cause it’s a hard crowd
And you’re tired of feeling out of place

Chorus
It’s a long day
When you’re living in a rotten world
You’ve got a long face
A sad face for such a pretty girl
You’ve got to learn how
To try to live your life before you die
You’ve got to know now
That there’s more to life than getting high…

Verse III
Inside a dark room
When you’re lying-there all by yourself
The smell of perfume
And the distant thoughts of someone else
I think you’ve traded
All your hopes and dreams for stable wealth
Your feelings faded
And you’ve put your heart up on a shelf

Verse IV
You could feel once
But now the lights are dim inside your soul
A burnt down candle
Without a reason for a reasonable goal
I tried to warn you
That there’s more to you than meets the eye
You tried to sell me
For a simple shaded kind of guy…
A simple shaded kind of guy…

Chorus
It’s a long day
When you’re living in a rotten world
You’ve got a long face
A sad face for such a pretty girl
You’ve got to learn how
To try to live your life before you die
You’ve got to know now
That there’s more to life than getting high…

The Quixotic Idiot

Written By: J. Shields

Verse I
“The grass is greener on the other side”
At least that’s what they said but I think they lied
I was the one, the one that ran from the truth
I guess you could say – I was running from you
If I find a key I’ll come and unlock your door
Show you the face of who I’m looking for
All this time I’m blind, I’m still looking for love
It’s hard to love somebody when you don’t love yourself

Chorus
It’s about forgiveness, I know
It’s about forgiving the past just letting it go
It’s hard to see tomorrow when you can’t lift you head off the floor…for sure
Just let it go

Verse II
Love is a gift. Love is a flame
I am on fire but I’m in pain
The years will go by the tears they will dry
I’ll believe in love until the day I die
Everybody needs somebody to hold
Because being alone, Lord it feels so cold
I cannot believe you’ve been so lonely so long
How about we make some love when I finish this song?

Chorus
It’s about forgiveness, I know
It’s about forgiving the past just letting it go
It’s hard to see tomorrow when you can’t lift you head off the floor…for sure
Just let it go

Tea Time

Written By: J. Shields

Verse I
Late last August in “The City of Lights”
I went downtown to try and catch a bite
I ended up in bed with a parasite
Something that I ate wasn’t cooked quite right
Now and forever I’m still holding on
The thirty-second floor seems a long way down
The air up here is a bit too thin
I can feel chapping on my leather skin

Chorus
Alright – alright – alright - alright
Think I’ll find another lover for tonight
Alright – alright – alright - okay
Sleep until the morning then I’ll float away

Verse II
I went to the doctor to try and cure my pain
He said, “You need a shrink, it’s something in your brain!”
I’ve been trying my whole life just to make amends
The voice inside my head’s going at it again
It asks me how I’m doing and I say just fine
It twists around my words ‘til I know I’m lying
So Jesus if you hear me could you drop a line
I’m down on M.L.K. with my bottle of rye

Chorus
Alright – alright – alright - alright
Think I’ll find another lover for tonight
Alright – alright – alright - okay
Sleep until the morning then I’ll float away

Verse III
So if you ever find out what you’re searching for
Call me up in Heaven; I’ll be at the door
Knocking once again, trying to make my way in
The Angels keep saying, “go away, you smell like gin.”
All I ever wanted was one drink with God
Ask him a couple questions…got me in a fog…
The answers to the universe and all this war
Why Calvin Klein is loaded and the Russians are poor?

Chorus
Alright – alright – alright - alright
Think I’ll find another lover for tonight
Alright – alright – alright - okay
Sleep until the morning then I’ll float away

Chorus II
So if you ever see me
Walking down your streets at night
You’d better lock your little sister up
Before I cause a fight
I’m a messed up individual.
I never finished high school
I don’t give a damn about anything
I don’t need your opinion on how I sing
I was sent here on the morning star
Ended up at your local bar
Putting these thoughts inside your head
To try and find another way
To keep your monkey brains occupied
And slowly shape your life

Chorus
Alright – alright – alright - alright
Think I’ll find another lover for tonight
Alright – alright – alright - okay
Sleep until the morning then I’ll float away
Alright – alright – alright - alright
Think I’ll find another lover for tonight
Alright – alright – alright - okay
Sleep until the morning then I’ll float away

Tuesday's Love Affair

Written By: J. Shields

Verse I
She woke one morning
With a swollen head
From last night’s whiskey
Bottle by her bed
Outside it’s raining
As she wipes her eyes
There’s just one question
Running through her mind

Chorus
If Tuesday’s love affair’s no more
Is, all fair in love and war?
Count your blessings just once more
Riddler’s questions now just bore

Verse II
We heard her calling
From the old grave yard
Far past the pasture
And the burnt down barn
She cried for Mary
She cried in vain
We heard wolves howl
But no one came

Chorus
If Tuesday’s love affair’s no more
Is, all fair in love and war?
Count your blessings oh what for?
Riddler’s questions now just bore

Accordion Solo

Verse III
She woke this morning
With a worried head
From last night’s risky
Business in her bed
Her mind is aching
But she don’t know why
Her heart keeps breaking
As the tears roll by...

Chorus
If Tuesday’s love affair’s no more
Is, all fair in love and war?
Count your blessings just once more
Riddler’s questions now just bore

Scotch Bonnet Hollandaise

Written By: J. Shields

Verse I
What was I thinking? I must have been drinking
This scotch, it is sinking in my brain
What was I drinking? I caught myself thinking
That you were feeling the same way
This cloud that I’m under, like lightning, like thunder
It leaves my poor heart in the rain
Child of perfection, no sense of direction
A constant infliction of pain…

Chorus
Whiskey, take me away
All I have left to say
Scotch Bonnet Hollandaise…

Verse II
What were you saying? And were you just playing
Some game to help pass through the time
The lights in your city are shining so pretty
Wish I could make my own lights shine
The night gets so lonely, this world’s filled with phonies
A Holden Caulfield state of mind
Distracted by incense, this talk is just nonsense
Still searching for what I can’t find…

Chorus
Whiskey, take me away
All I have left to say
Scotch Bonnet Hollandaise…

Bridge

Chorus
Whiskey, take me away
All I have left to say
Scotch Bonnet Hollandaise…
