"Band of the Day"

Soho Vamp takes it's cues from the early 70's glam scene. In addition to playing original material that sounds like Sweet and Hunky Dory-era Bowie, they also hit the stage decked out in platform shoes, sequins, shiny scarves, the whole bit. It works because the songs are excellent. "Tophat Tomcat", "Diamondback Cadillac", "Dangerous Breed" and "Equalizer" all sound like they could have come right out of the Desolation Boulevard sessions. They easily could fall into a trap of being mere imitators, but Soho Vamp dodges that bullet with style and just enough originality mixed in with their homage. If you like your rock 'n roll to be, above all else, fun, then you ought to check this Hollywood trio out. - myspace.com/tedcogs

"Soho Vamp"
by Soho Vamp

a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

The L.A.-based trio Soho Vamp are clearly nostalgic about the glam rock era. Singer/guitarist Tom Mesmer has a neat way of penning his songs.

"Diamondback Cadillac" opens the record with a confident bang, all glam stylings in place.

"Equalizer" features a nicely Bowie-esque vocal and a stirring chorus.

"Fabulous Jack" echoes classic T Rex ballads like "Cosmic Dancer" and adds a dollop of Bryan Ferry's mannered vocals on early Roxy Music records.

"Growler" sounds like the Strokes if they'd been more into glam. Mesmer's vocal is right on the money and the trio play like a much bigger band.

"Tophat Tomcat" apes "Hang on to Yourself" a little but is still its own song.

It's a very nice debut.

Bio

Soho Vamp’s look matches their pose as unabashed rock stars. Full make-up, high-heeled boots, silver trousers, jewelry, sequins, and nail lacquer will get the night started off right. Their sound is that hi-watt lo-fi garage din reminiscent of T.Rex, Bowie, Slade and Sweet. It’s bubblegum-blues with a twist of pomp. Inspired by writers ranging from Oscar Wilde to Dostoyevsky, Mesmer’s lyrics can provoke themes of destiny, good and evil, and jubilation. Soho Vamp’s songs “Diamondback-Cadillac” and “Parasite” even caught the ear of horror legend Wes Craven for last summer’s hit film RED EYE. Their debut album released March 2006 has spawned another single, "Tophat Tomcat", to be featured in the soon to be released film THE BREED, starring Michelle Rodriguez.
