"DC Show review..."

“If a band chooses a sweet name like Solar Powered Sun Destroyer, they've already set themselves up for hefty expectations. The moniker brings to mind an all out guitar assault that leaves ears bleeding and brain cells, well, destroyed. The truth is more interesting. Yes, all five members of Solar Powered Sun Destroyer count various hardcore bands among their influences, and guitarists Justin Horenstein and Dave Davies (no, not the guy from the Kinks) both have considerable technical chops. But the guitar parts veer more toward the post-rock end of the spectrum, and the vocal melodies of John Kneip are at once powerful and sweetly emotive. At their most visceral, they could find a spot next to bands like The Life and Times or Explosions in the Sky. At their most experimental, they bring to mind M83.” -DCist - The DCist

"Baltimore Show review..."

“Though the visual fireworks Wednesday night undoubtedly went to the Faint/Ladytron show, the aural ecstasy hit peak levels on the club stage of Sonar, where newly re-organized DC natives Solar Powered Sun Destroyer channeled a cinematic intensity reminiscent of Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, perfecting the scream and gradually overwhelming roar of the perpetual combustions that fuel a star.” -Aural States - Aural States

"Culture Mob Show review..."

“Since first getting together in early 2008, Solar Powered Sun Destroyer have breathing life back into the Dead City underground with a formidable live show that includes three guitarists, a light array and epic sounding songs that combine avant garde ambience and genre-defying riffage with (gasp) melody.” -Culture Mob DC - Culture Mob

"College Class / Fan review..."

Tonight’s Appleseed Cast performance at DC9 was prefaced with an fabulous surprise. Local openers “Solar Powered Sun Destroyer” put on a truly epic live show. A five piece, they play a brand of melodic hardcore that draws equal amounts from Brian Eno and Isis. They don’t sound a whole lot like most DC hardcore bands that have existed thus far, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. Their sound veers into emo territory but is vicious and crushing quite often and never whiny. Overall they would fit well on a bill alongside other “post-metal” bands such as Pelican and Cult of Luna, but they certainly also fit well alongside The Appleseed Cast.” -ATEC396 - ATEC396
