Sometimes life’s worst events can be the catalyst for self-discovery and re-invention. In the case of Chicago artist Solo Sam, receiving word from the NCAA that he was unable to play ball spurred him to take his passion for rapping to the next level. During this period of coping and acceptance, he crafted his first mixtape, fittingly titled Off Season. “I always used music as a coping mechanism so I decided I should create a mixtape that would help me navigate through my struggle, that’s where my first songs came from.” Citing the likes of Kanye West, J. Cole and Jay-Z as personal influences, it is apparent that he has more on his mind than to just be another rapper, and his music pushes to break any preconceived notions about what it means to be an artist from Chicago. His latest mixtape, Storm, shows an emerging MC who is growing more comfortable with his voice and is making promising progress discovering his distinct sound. College student SoloSam is a new rapper on the scene, dropping his first full-fledged mixtape #Storm. The 10-track project showcases the Chicago native’s smooth flow on lush original beats as well trap bangers like DJ Snake’s “Bird Machine“ and TNGHT’s “Higher Ground.” With Kanye-esque production (shout out to the dope “Drive Slow” edit), story-telling like Lupe, and a chief keef knack for bringing raw energy on hype tracks, SoloSam is a true product of the windy city.
