Thanks to their amorphous explorations of genre and musical color, Something Fiction is a difficult group to pin down, placing themselves willfully and delightfully outside the boundaries of convenient classification. Botany, the young local group's debut EP (available on their Bandcamp page), submerges the listener in ruminant washes of guitar, ethereal and earthy noise, synth, bongos, and hypnotic vocals. It is an intense, challenging, and inspiring journey: a postmodern, post-religious ritual in trance-inducing sonic form. The trio of tracks at the heart of the EP's elevating power — "The Sky," "Japanese Sunrise," and "Lucid Dream Machine" — are rich in deep brooding psychedelic textures that are meandering and mind-melting, but never arbitrary. Keep your eyes (all three of them) and ears on Something Fiction — they are destined for otherworldly glories. - James Courtney at SA Current
