One of Chicago's electrifying new bands, Something Ordinary has thrilled thousands of fans at some of the Windy City's most prestigious venues and across the Midwest.
In April 2006, Something Ordinary won the Q101 Local Music Mailroom and became one of the most requested Chicago bands on Chicago's premiere alternative station.
Something Ordinary formed in 2002 when lead singer Gary Stanton met up with drummer Joel Abraham at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Gary was a reluctant performer at first, writing music for his ears only. But a cadre of his friends pressured him into an impromptu dorm-room session, where he performed his original works and completely stunned his friends with the quality and depth of his musical talents and songwriting ability.
Joel, who began his musical career in his church choir at age 6, was intently focused on school. But when he met Gary, they realized that their personalities and musical styles complimented each other.
Something Ordinary rounded out their group with Jay Mathes, a professional musician who has classical training in violin and recorded his first album at age 16. Jay's vast musical knowledge and experience helped to round out Something Ordinary, and his exemplary guitar skills provide a memorable riff to go along with the inspiring lyrics.
Their debut EP, "Speak in Shadows," was released in March 2006 to a throng of rave reviews and large performances.
Coming off a University of Illinois Battle of the Bands competition in which they won, a show at the Naperville Ribfest in front of over 5,000 spectators and an appearance in the semi-finals of the 2006 Emergenza music competiton, Something Ordinary has developed into one of Chicago's finest pop-rock bands.
