"Sonia Funk Releases Her Take On A Canadian Holiday Classic The Huron Carol Angel's Song Remix"

For the 2010 holiday season, Canadian Singer/songwriter Sonia Funk releases a Christmas EP titled Carol with a new radio-remix of her rendition of "The Huron Carol - Angel's Song Remix" that includes a new chorus she wrote for the song. With Indigo in-store performances, a special EP release party, working on a new album of original material for 2011 and teaming up with some amazing charities tba, Sonia has a busy holiday season ahead.

Funk had envisioned arranging and recording a Christmas record as long as she had been making music. When she decided to return to music full time in 2009, an EP of Christmas Carols seemed like the natural path to find her way back into the industry. The response was overwhelming, particularly because she resided in the UK at the time of the EP's release.

Sonia made a quick decision to officially release the record to radio - the old fashioned way. A hard copy delivery, (by her Dad!) to her local hometown station in Winkler Manitoba, landed in the hands of Trev Schellenberg, Music Director for half of Golden West Radio's Southern Prairie stations. He fell in love with the tunes and by the end of December, Sonia's little EP had tallied 800 spins across Southern AB, SAS and MB. In the UK, Mood Media took the record and put it into their Christmas Playlists for retail and hospitality clients across UK, Europe and into Australia.

Sonia has now repatriated to Canada, bringing with her the completely re-mastered EP now called Carol and the Radio Remix of "The Huron Carol." Music and program directors across Canada are already singing her praises.

This holiday, when you find a lull in those Bing and Frank records, feast your ears on this Canadian songbird's holiday EP. This Enchanting and Whimsical take on an old Tradition is sure to brighten your Christmas spirit and become a staple in your holiday music traditions.

"Wow!!! Truly Beautiful. Sonia absolutely nails the spirit of the season" - Andy Ross, PD, Wired 96.3 FM, Saskatoon

"I love the song! It can be a bit of a struggle to find solid Christmas tunes for airplay so "The Huron Carol Remix" will be a really nice add this season. Well done!" - David Drake, MD, BOB FM, Winnipeg

Canadian singer/songwriter Sonia Funk made a promising debut in 1999 with "Close Your Eyes", featuring plenty of hit worthy songs like the award winning "Ashes Fall Down". But Sonia then dropped out of site as she returned to school to finish her education. Looking for a way to reintroduce herself to Canada and the rest of the musical world, Sonia last year released an EP of Christmas songs entitled "Karel". The EP was quite the seasonal hit north of the border. This year, Sonia reworked one of the songs from that EP, "The Huron Carol", and she's shooting for a little recognition here in the states. Sonia has a sound that should remind you of Sara McLachlan, with bits of Enya and Loreena McKinnet mixed in. Sonia's folk pop sound on the updated "Carol", and the new "Huron Carol" in particular, should appeal to a broad range of tastes--from fans of adult contemporary and soft rock to fans of a more album oriented sound, as well as New Age and Folk audiences. Check the song samples at Sonia's web site. - Stubby's House of Christmas

a little more about Sonia...

Sonia originally hails from Winkler, a small town in Southern Manitoba, Canada. She began her musical career shortly after beginning her studies at the University of Winnipeg. It was here that she met Olaf Pyttlik, the future producer of her first full-length recording “Close Your Eyes,” released in 1999. Sonia spent many years touring across the Prairies with her band, and won several performance and songwriting awards, included a Top Ten spot in the National Songwriting Competition for her song “Ashes Fall Down.” She played everything from Cafes, Television/Radio shows, and Folk Festivals, to the same bill as The Mathew Good Band.

In 2002 Sonia decided to concentrate on songwriting. She worked with many producer/writers across Canada during those years and eventually moved to Toronto. She is currently considering releasing the best of those years as a collection of B-sides.

In 2005 Sonia returned to school to finish her post-secondary education and see a bit of the world. She spent several years living and working in New York, Toronto, London (UK,) and the Middle East and traveling throughout Europe. By 2009 Sonia decided it was time to get back to the music. Having always had a vision for arranging and recording a Christmas Record, she made a Trans-Atlantic trip to Montreal to meet with her long time friend and guitar player, Graham Playford. They decided to tackle the project and produce it together. Unbeknownst to them at the time, this was to be the first of what is shaping up to be many co-productions between them.

In November of 2009, while still residing in the UK, Sonia released her collection of Christmas Carols in Canada, as an EP called "Karel." Sonia had her dad drop off a hardcopy at the radio station in her home town. Somehow that CD landed in the hands of Trev Schellenberg, Music Director for 9 GoldenWest stations across the prairies. He put it into rotation, landing the album over 800 spins in the month of December. In the UK, Mood Media took the record and put it into their Christmas Playlists for retail and hospitality clients across UK and Europe.

In 2010 Sonia decided it was time to return home and re-release ‘Karel’ properly; by actually being present in the Canada. She went back into the studio to record the remix for radio, renamed the album 'Carol,' and, well, the rest you already know. Sonia is now based in Toronto but is considering a move back home to the Prairies soon...
