Sonny Bonoho Presents...
"Out Of State" The Album

2050 Entertainment

by Keith Ancker

Maybe it's the rain, maybe it's all the coffee, I don't know, but there has to be something out there to account for Sonny Bonoho. A Coogi and cowboy boots. If nothing else it's eye catching. But enough about the cover.

How's the music? Well, Out Of State is compilation album, so after the interesting "Get Down," Sonny lays back and gives shine to a bunch of other cats, some local like Bad Luk, Siccnezz, Glisen and Grynch, to a gang of out of state rhyme spitters like Washington D.C.'s K-Chill, LA heavyweight Kurupt and Mad-Ro who hails from Boise, Idaho.

The single best track, and one that almost makes the album worth buying all by itself, Rudi Deville's "Dreamz" is a smooth-ass joint, with subtle horns and an ill little guitar sample. Rudi's rhymes ride the beat beautifully and the hook is ill. This is a cat to be looking out for.

Seattle rep Tru ID slides through to "Let's Take A Ride," a nice track with a mellow bass line that Tru rides hard brings some energy to.

I don't know who produced Grynch's "I'm Back," but he's ill, real ill. Grynch aint' bad either. Definitely a hot track.

Overall, a solid effort. Sonny has managed to put out a fairly strong comp without too many tracks that'll leave you reaching for the skip button. The diversity of styles and production are noticeable, but it all complements each itself. I'd buy it before I'd buy J-Kwon or Chingy. - Seaspot.com

"My Philosphy"

Off the top, let me just say this: We're fucked.

Ahem. That said, I'm an asshole for not honoring the second anniversary (Oct 30) of the death of Jason Mizell, the one and only Jam Master Jay, in this column. Jay's contribution to this culture of hiphop is immeasurable; as a fan, as a hiphop lover, and as a Mizell, I honor him and his family. Sadly, our soldiers in this hiphop game all too often come to a violent end. Northern Cali rap legend Mac Dre was killed in a shooting in Kansas City November 1. A Vallejo native, Dre first LP dropped in '89; sadly, soon after he was convicted of conspiracy to rob a bank and sent to prison for a five-year bid. After getting out in '96, Dre dropped hella material, including the influential Rompalation series. May his killer be brought to justice, as well as the men who murdered Tupac, Biggie, and Jam Master Jay.

Okay, Costco-sized kudos go out to Portland patriarch and NW legend Cool Nutz for his POH HOP festival, the ninth installment of which went down a couple weekends ago. Cool Nutz deserves praise not just for his own considerable and consistent catalog, but for his efforts to expand the visibility of NW hiphop. With a theme of "Politics as Usual," POH HOP 9 included panels and workshops on producing quality product, the election, and hiphop activism. The performances wisely focused on artists trying to start a movement, not just drop a CD and disappear... Byrdie, the Blue Scholars (opening up for De La Soul on the 15th), Split 50's E-Dawg, and the one and only Sonny Bonoho reportedly put it down for the Emerald in grand style. P-Town Oldominion representers Siren's Echo also did their thing, rocking with a live band. If you're not up on Siren's Echo, I'd recommend you find their self-titled debut and peep them when they come through town next month; the surprisingly harmonic marriage of chanteuse Toni Hill's sultry vocals and Syndel's Thorn City spitfire result in a sharp, soulful gumbo that have made them a force to be reckoned with in Rose City and beyond.

So what did you do Tuesday, November 2? If your lame ass didn't vote, you owe me an apology everyday until W's upcoming Supreme Court appointees kick the bucket, let's say roughly... 50 years from now? Sigh... Well, if you've got a free Tuesday coming up, here're just a couple of recommendations. There's FourthCity's "Stop Biting" weekly at the Lo-Fi, featuring DJs Hideki, Kamui, and Bumblebee; just a couple weeks ago they had Dr. Oop of L.A.'s Black Love Crew up there. Also worth checking on Tuesdays is O'Deezy's Hip-Hop Showcase at the Rainbow, one of my favorite grand dives in town. They feature live performances from local talent, so sign up if you're trying to get out there, kids....

And yeah, R. Kelly is suing his now ex-tourmate, Jay-Z, for 75 million; Kells claims one of Hov's camp pepper-sprayed him backstage... Damn, it's a pisser when noxious fluids are sprayed in one's face.

Oh, and did I mention we're fucked? - Larry Mizell of the Stranger

"Sonny Bonoho on tour wit Lil Jon's Recording Artist Bohagon in Germany"

Get Down featuring Playboy Tre.

"DJ Spark: When Did the Polygamist ____ his ____s? (Vail, CO to Park City, UT)Jedi Mind Trick Tour"

It was now up to Sean Price, Grayskul and a handful of local openers to fill the bill. Sonny Bonoho rocked the crowd with his Sonny disposition, my first impression of his performance…when he has the mic, people pay attention. He style ranges from soulful mainstream melodies to funny, almost Digital Undergroundish party music. The show was made a little more interesting when a rep from MTV 2 showed up to take footage of Grayskul for their on demand show “On the Rise,” followed up by an Interview set for the next morning.

The absence of J.M.T. lead to a smaller crowd, Sean Price took advantage of the intimate setting introducing himself and then asking the front row “when I point to you, say your name”. Sean has been for the most part reserved and laying low until show time, but because of tonight’s set of circumstances Price showed up a little early and caught Grayskul’s set. There was a touching moment after the show when Sean Price came to up to Onry and Jfk individually, told the two it was the first time that he had seen the set. “You guys really killed it,” he said, accompanied by the three words everyone longs to hear. “Y’all spit bodies.” We all have been fans since the ‘96 Heltah Skeltah debut, “Nocturnal,” so It was great a great compliment to hear.

"RIP Nightlight Lounge, Bellingham"

RIP Nightlight Lounge, Bellingham WA 2004-2008

The college town(Western Washington University to be exact) of Bellingham is a goddamn depressing rainy shithole of a town about 2 hours north of Seattle. I briefly lived up there in '99 and after I left thought I'd seen the last of it...til me & my dude started a rap group and he moved to the Ham to attend WWU. We did our fair share of shows out that way- still do- and every night I've since spent out there brought back the not so fresh empty-yawning-despair-pit feeling I thought I'd left behind.

However, I just loves rocking out there and then escaping home, money in hand, like a thief in the night! Too bad all the venues we played in Bellingham were mostly crap(much love as always, however, to my man Surge for always lookin out).

The Nightlight Lounge, however, was a sumptuous, spacious oasis tucked away on Chestnut where we played many great shows.

The staff was always courteous and the sound crispy. Hardwood floors, pool tables, multiple bars & lounge areas and great, comfortable decor all would've made it stand out in Seattle, let alone in the 360. The club's posters (courtesy of Mark Brinn), were always tight. Barfly, Mr. Hill and I drank a shitload of Ranier in the green room, which is also where CR famously drank Dave Meinert's Bushmill's.
I always said it was wasted on the Ham- and sadly last night was it's final night. The Nightlight hosted an all-star farewell show featuring C-Rayz Walz, One Be Lo, Grayskul, Sandpeople, Xperience, Grynch, Sonny Bonoho, Surge Spittable, Tulsi, DJ Echo and DJ Marc Sense.

C-Rayz posted up this summary of last night's festivities on his Myspace, here's a lil sample:

FIRST OF ALL PEACE TO MATT, SPENCER AND HIS BURRITO SPOT "CASA QUE PASA" MY PEOPLE S WHO ALWAYS TREAT ME LIKE FAMILY AT "THE RUSSIAN DUMPLING SPOT", SAM THE SOUNDMAN, ALL THE FLY PEOPLE THAT WENT TO THE SHOWS AND "80's NIGHT", SUPER PROMOTER/MC/BROTHER SERGE SPITTABLE/ THE CONQUEST PROMOTIONAL STAFF AND THE WHOLE "NIGHTLIGHT" FAMILY.

SHOUT-OUT TO DJ MAH ONE FOR ALWAYS PUTTING THE BATTERY IN MY ROCKIT JET BLAZER.
1 LOVE FAMZ

"Hip Hop in Corporate America? Let’s Ask YSL"

he third artist is Sonny Bonoho. YSL says he’s fun and he doesn’t take life too seriously. Sonny brings something different to hip-hop. Sonny is currently working on a new album and YSL is looking forward to it. In YSL’s words, “Sonny has flavor.” He also pointed me to bbskate.com to learn more about Sonny’s entrepreneurial business outside of rap. - http://blog.culturemob.com/hip-hop-in-corporate-america-let%E2%80%99s-ask-ysl

SONNY GETDOWN MMM

Hype & anticipated debut album of Sonny Bonoho, Life of a Backup Singer. With no speculation necessary this is the album. It is well thought out and hip hop fun album. Known for his satiric style rhyming. He is the funkiest artist around. This album is packed with juicy urban beats, dance floor shaking anthems that are sure to please club goers and more.... The first track of this album is Get Down. Watch music video clip here.

REAL SONNY IN SEATTLE

Introducing another quirky Lao hip hop artist, who has been making some noises in the Northwest for some times. According to inside information, he has no doubt been one of many Lao hip hop artists in the States that really make a name for himself.

Born in Ubon, Thailand. He is Lao though. He is Sonny Thongoulay aka Sonny Bonoho from Seattle. He is the only Asian American known on the music scene as one of the best music mixers in the Pacific Northwest.

After the finals of Amateur Fest at the Apollo, he got to open shows for Snoop, BG, Master P, Devin the Dude, and Twista. After countless tours States wide and collaborations, he released Life of a Backup Singer album. But it’s his distinct sound, originality, innovative, creative fashion that has ensured his name’s become a staple feature in conversation at the dinner table. For full details of accomplishment refer to his websites.

Bio

If you think hip-hop has an honesty problem, don’t only go blaming the studio gangstas. These days, rappers too often fail to be true to themselves whether that means not practicing what they preach or expressing their desires but never their fears. Sooner or later, we all need a healthy dose of Sonny Bonoho.

An Asian American MC known by the stage name of Sonny Bonoho has shown his notorious bright lights and simultaneously brought a measure of humor in the Pacific Northwest. “Sonny Bonoho’s music is to improve quality of life. It’s the struggle to solve problems within yourself, he explains.

It was a long stride for Sonny Bonoho to start making his name for himself in the Tacoma/Seattle area. Sonny Bonoho has given back to his community in more ways than one. This emcee has done everything from raising money for Katrina victims to hosting local Rap and B-Boy competitions. “In my community, many people know me as the person who always ties everybody together. While doing all that, I still focus on Sonny Bonoho, the artist.

Sonny Bonoho is the poster boy for hard work, which has paid off by hitting the streets and working on his projects independently. He has opened shows for heavyweights such as Outlaw, 2 Live Crew, Digital Underground, Dylan, Bohagon, Playboy Tre, Devin the Dude, Twista, Kurupt, Flavor Flav, Cool Nutz, Yukmouth, E-40, RBL, Jedi Mind Trick, Sean Price, Dj Quik, AMG, Prodigy, Cassie, Sean Kingston, Richboy, Silk, Slick Rick, De La Soul, YZ, Andre Nikatina, & more. He evidently grew into an innovative structured hip-hop collective designed.

In 2005, Sonny Bonoho hooked up with Ga Durt Artist’s Playboy Tre & Bohagon of Lil Jon’s record label BME. After working on a number of projects together, Sonny Bonoho & Playboy Tre decided to shoot the video “Get Down together. In the Summer of 2006, he placed a song called “Telling You Featuring Playboy Tre on the Ga Durt Compilation. He even started a new group with Playboy Tre called “The Bona Brothers. In 2007, It was a big power move for Sonny Bonoho. He played over 100 concerts last year. He was on tour with Bohagon & Playboy Tre in Germany. “It’s a blessing to make good music with my brothers Bohagon & Playboy Tre, explains Sonny Bonoho.

His debut album, “Life of a Back-Up Singer which includes Bohagon, Playboy Tre, Humpty of Digital Underground, and more. This rapper/producer/promoter has made a name for himself because of his genuine style and offbeat personality. The original concept for his album was to feature HipHop as the lead vocal and Sonny Bonoho on the back-up mic. “Everything about me is unorthodox and that’s how I feel about HipHop.

Listening to Sonny’s lyrics and fluid sound will make you laugh and have a good time. His quirky character has taken full spotlight. Under his own label Twenty Fifty, he has released “Life of a Back-Up Singer and “Wonderland Mixtape.
