Trumpeter Joe Phillips, guitarist Matt Owen, harpist Rhys Jones, mandolin ace Arthur Lancelyn-Green, bass player Henry Naish, drummer Alex Watson, singer Jennie Wood, pianist Will Harris and singer/guitarist Michael Docherty are a band of university friends who began making music together in the early part of 2009. Originally a group put together by Michael as a vehicle for his songs, they soon found themselves feeling scarily like 'a real band'.
Initially performing under the name 'Dear Landlord', the nine-piece started putting together a raucous set suffused with keening melodies, sweet harmonies and joyous instrumental interplay which brought them a multitude of gigs around Oxford, supporting such luminaries as Johnny Flynn, Jeremy Warmsley, Northern Portrait and Misty’s Big Adventure.
Having changed their name to 'Sonny Liston' to avoid confusion with a rather different, American Dear Landlord, the band are hoping that with the new name comes new success, as they look forward to their first headline sets and a support date for indiepop favourites the Bobby McGees.
