Bio

From the heart of cosmopolitan Montreal comes La Internacional Sonora Calavera, one of Canada’s most exhilarating worldbeat acts. Their signature LatinReggaeRock style concocts a vibrant blend of Afro-Latin grooves delivered with the energy of a rock band.

The band, formed in 2003, compiles music influences from their native Latin America, their North American urban milieu and the overwhelming musical diversity of their multicultural Montreal.

La Internacional Sonora Calavera, the brainchild of Mariano Franco and Fernando Pinzon, features an array of talented musicians such as Jose Dominguez on drums, Rodrigo Olguin on bass, percussionist Manuel Jaramillo, Eldad Tsabary on the flute, Justin V. Fortin on the trumpet and Nadav Nirenberg on the trombone.

The band started making a name for themselves in the local scene of Montreal during 2003 and 2004, playing in some of the best venues existing in the city such as Le Swimming, The Rialto Theatre (along Mexican music icon Alex Lora), La Sala Rosa, Petit Campus, Les Bobards and many more. In autumn 2004 they embarked on more ambitious projects. As a hands-on working machine, they organized and produced Montreal Alter-Latino, the city’s first Latin Alternative festival featuring La Sonora Calavera and guest buddies Plan C from Toronto; two of Canada’s upcoming Latin-Alternative acts together in an event that only promises to grow in the coming years.

By the end of 2004 the band was ready for the road, which started in Mexico City as supporting act for Argentina’s Ska legends Los Calzones. They toured from Mexico City all the way to northern Monterrey and back in a span of two weeks. In Mexico City they had the chance to share stage with MW Records’ Riesgo de Contagio and Luakabop’s Mexican boys Los de Abajo. On their return home to Montreal, La Internacional Sonora
Calavera were featured in the Social Carnival concert held at the famous Café Campus in January 2005, along local luminaries La Chango Family and Tomas Jensen.

The band has been featured in articles in Montreal’s weekly newspaper The Mirror (December 18-22 2003) and Canada’s popular Exclaim magazine (September 2004), a national institution of the music scene. They have also been covered in columns in Montreal’s leading French newspaper Le Voir and Los Angeles’ Al Borde Magazine (December 16 – Jan. 13 2004). Exclaim’s Sergio Elmir wrote: “La Sonora Calavera is a more international affair, a danceable fest that mashes ska-dub with rock and folkloric elements with a touch of Quebecois flair, creating an incredible flow of deep rhythms and colourful movement in their music… ”

As the band work on their debut album (spring 2006), they’re simultaneously developing their stage show for the upcoming summer festival season in North America. Make sure to keep track of this outfit as their sure to hit your time some time in 2006.
