"Sonus is Poised Under Pressure"

Think starting up a band is easy? Try throwing in school, full time work, family and friends at the same time and you get power-rock quinted Sonus' complete schedule. "We've definitely felt those pressures all throughout the time we've been together and we still deal with them now," says guitarist Justin Cowdy via e-mail. "It gets a little hard sometimes, but we have a lot of driveand a lot of support, and that's what any band needs when are at the stage we're at now."

Formed over three years ago, and still going strong, the Abbotsford-based band originally came together through friends and family connections. "Dave (Atkinson) and Tugrul (Rahimoglu) started it all out, first getting Dave's cousin Billy (Derksen) to sing and adding myself as a second gutiarist. I had graduated with both of their older siblings, so when they got inspired to start up this band, I guess I stood out as a good fit," says Cowdy.

When choosing a name, the band wanted something that truly related to them. "Sonus, which means 'sound' in Latin was a name that was tossed at us through a close friend," explains Cowdy, "It's a name that's not easily forgotten, nor is it a word that's generally used. "It's also the individuality of the name, being a single word, that fit well with us as we like to make our music stand out on its own."

With their seemingly effortless self-titled album rife with killer guitar solos and exceptional melodies, Justin admits it was no easy task. "Our recording schedule was very stressful. We had five days, 9 am-5 pm to record basically everything," he says. "We were only able to budget for five (songs), so that made things difficult."

Still, Sonus certainly didn't set the bar low on their album. "Our expectations were very high for each other and we were very particular about how the album sounded before it was mastered and released," maintains Cowdy.

When asked about future plans, Sonus has some rather ambitious goals. "We're still writing more and more music and we hope to push out a full-length album by the spring of 2008," says Cowdy, "We've also got big dreams of hitting up the US and Europe for tours, but we have to get across Canada first I'd say."

With no intentions on taking a break anytime soon, Sonus is charging ahead full throttle.

Bio

The days of quitting your job and heading out on a search for a great label to pick you up because of a few great songs are pretty much done. There isn't anybody in this band that hasn't recognized that, and it's pretty obvious with the lives each memeber has outside of time spent together. Working full time, some with second jobs, and 3 guys enrolled in university, it's amazing Sonus has managed to last 4 years together, but they have.

It's an absolute love for music that keeps these 5 very different individuals together. Drawing influences in their lives from different bands and artists such as Dream Theater, Thornley, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Breaking Benjamin, Muse, Alter Bridge, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and so many many more. It's this difference in personality that pushes the boys to write the music they do. Songs like 219 and 10 Seconds show some raw emotion that they have encountered together since forming in 2004, while Prison of Pride and Why draw more on their past experiences growing up.

Sonus is also a group of tireless workers. Not only do they work every practice to strive at writing and producing better and better music, but on their own times they strive to be the best musicians they can be personally. And this hard work consistently pays off on the live scene, where they have received countless compliments on being one of the tightest bands around.
