"Sweet at 16"

Sonya Kitchell has just brought down the house at Northampton's Iron Horse Music Hall with a pounding rendition of the blues classic "Moanin'", in a duet with gospel singer Moonlight Davis. Earlier, as Davis was standing by the door tapping his foot to the late-December show, which featured his stepson, Miro Sprague, on piano. During these extended "Moanin" minutes, the 50-year age gap between Kitchell and Davis seemed to canish. but in a Cinderella-like turn, this musical illusion would itself vanish by midnight. Kitchell has been on tour for two weeks, and the next day she has hours of homework to catch up on. Kitchell is 15.

In addition to playing sold-out shows at the Iron Horse, a stage she has graced since the age of 12, Kitchell has been touring the Bosont and New York areas since last fall, opening for Madeleine Peyroux at the Regatta Bar and for guitar virtuoso Kaki King at venues around the Northeast. On April 7, she'll headline her own show at the Regattabar, promoting her debut CD, "Cold Day". "Sonya is a young fireball with raw talent and great spirit", says Peyroux.

As Kitchell's career gains momentum, what most sets her apart from other teen phenoms is her songwriting. With the exception of a few jazz standards sprinkled through her shows, Kitchell performs her own material, most of it polished, all of it idiosyncratic and hard to classify.

Further development is what Kitchell wants, too, not only for herself but for music in general. "I want pop music to go back to its roots, to be more acoustic, not to be mindless, for people to actually be able to listen to the lyrics because there are messages." As for her own growth, "one goal that I joke about is wanting to write as much good music as the Beatles, which of course, is impossible. But I might as well shoot high, because then maybe I'll get halfway there." - Boston Globe Magazine
