"Emerging artists"

July 2006

“Sophie Young. She has already been front-woman for a group of guys, won a national songwriting competition, and sung in the rain at a street fair on St-Laurent Blvd, which didn't stop her from attracting passer-bys. This Anglo-Montrealer influenced by Dido and Coldplay is realizing her dream by launching her first solo album, a compilation of pop-folk acoustic music which is a very pleasant listen, even at full blast in the car.”
- Châtelaine/Caroline Fortin

"Reviews"

July 15-16 2006

“ ...This Montreal singer-songwriter who has already been at the heart of the group Modern Stories, proposes 11 pop-rock song titles with a slight folk acoustic twist, reminding us of influences by Sheryl Crow, for example... All in all the album comes in fresh like the breeze, brought in from the modulations of Sophie Young’s very intriguing voice.”
- Le Droit/Ottawa/Valerie Lessard

"Radio Website"

August 2006

"This young Anglophone artist offers us a lively album similar to artists like Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega and even Melissa Etheridge. Some of my favorite tracks on the album are "Waiting for the Sun", "Moonshine Bar", "Subway Track", and "Drifting". An album to check out for the summer season..” - CHRM 105.3 FM Matane/Denis Lévesque

Review of Sophie Young - (Independent)

“...If Moonshine Bar , the last song on her album, sets us towards the dusty road on the border of country, we will follow her with great pleasure.”

Bio

Montreal singer/songwriter Sophie Young has been inspired for writing music and singing for as long as she can remember. She knew even before she joined her first band that she wanted to be on stage and to write songs. She has a talent for mesmerizing her audience and to draw them into her world. Along with her first band ‘Modern Stories’ they then went on to co-write trip-hop/rock music and repeatedly took over the stage and won over audiences with every performance. Their talents and hard work, did not go unnoticed, because subsequently, they won a radio contest ‘CHOM l’Esprit Battle of the Bands’. In the press, Sophie’s performances on stage and her voice were compared to a blend of such artists as Shirley Manson (Garbage)/Beth Gibbons (Portishead)/PJ Harvey. The band went on to record an album called ‘Moving Target’. They also went on to open for such acts as ‘Men at Work’ and ‘Moist’ and continued to tour North America until they disbanded in 2002.

Sophie has since released her first self-titled album in 2006 and won top honors in the regional contingent of the ‘National Songwriting Competition’ for her single ‘Waiting for the Sun’, which got heavy rotation on Montreal’s Mix 96 radio station and reached the top 10 on the radio charts. She has also received numerous positive feedbacks from the press and released a video, directed by Emmanuel Hessler.
