"Sophmore Jakes SCF 2007 program"

No strangers to SCF, these Macleod boyz having grown up with the music of SCF and festival hubbub singing in their young ears.
smithing their own tunes for years already, this power trio of young men, 2/3 of whom are only twenty
have a tight set of electric folk/pop
punk material peppered with social commentary. The Jakes have a great little CD now, too! rumoured to be touring into the 'states on a best of Emergenza tour very soon... - South Country Fair

"Sophmore Jakes Release CD"

A punch in the face has likely never been so much fun.
"it an upbeat, energetic, pop punk rock punch in the face," Ryland Moranz said. Moranz is the lead singer and guitarist of Fort Macleod band Sophmore Jakes who will celerate the release of their album "Sophmore Jakes" at South Country Fair.

"we're so stoked about the release date party" Moranz said. "it's the fruition of the last two years of work"

The popular trio is rounded out by drummer Barent Goodrich and bassist Geoff Markey.

This is the first full length album from the band. it expands on a three song E.P recorded in august 2005 and released later that year.

the band recorded this album in edmonton last august at Sound Extractor studio, a process which Moranz assures was not as painful as the name makes it sound.

"by August we'd written more songs that we thought were worthy of bing on an album" Moranz said.

"we used a lot of instruments we don't usually play, like an echo machine from the 70's" he said. "it turned out to be a really pleasant ending that people wont expect"

The bands contiunued success and growth has lead to sponsorships with several companies within the music industry. they've developed partnerships with shine drums and percussion, basson sound equipment, and knucklehead strings.
"its been great to have people jump on board like that" Goodrich Said.

those sponsorships have helped their fan base grow and recently saw fans in California book venues and places for the band to crash during a small tour of the state. Sophmore Jakes had to politely decline, but may be heading to the states soon on a tour through the Emergenza music festival.

"we're aiming at taking it to the next level and make the band a full time jop for us, instead of just goofing around, "Morand said. "its exciting to take the first steps to not having to work in the daytime." - Chris Brown - Macleod Gazette

"Sophmore Jakes an absolute treat"

The Sophmore Jakes were an absolute treat. after playing their set of origionals, they responded with the audience calls of encore
by pulling out almost every cover song they'd ever learned and kept the party going well into the night. - John Armstrong, Sasquatch gathering

"Band Earns Main Stage"

The Fun Loving Sophmore Jakes serioud about break

Part of the charm of the Sophmore Jakes, Fort Macleods popular teenage trio is that they refuse to take themselves seriously.
Ryland Moranz, Geoff Markey and Barent Goodrich do take their music seriously however, and their solid work ethic is what earned them a set on the main stage this weekend at South Country Fair. (www.scfair.ab.ca)

The significance of eing invited to play the main stage, following a hip hop act from montreal is not lost on the thre teenagers.
"it's big," said Moranz, who plays lead guitar and lead vocals for the band.
"its the biggest thing we've done to date, we've been writing more new stuff specifically for this show"

The Three musicians realize they are part of something special, a band with a growing following that has managed to have a shelf life much greater than most teen groups.
"its such a fun thing to do" Moranz Said" "i couldn't find two better guys, i'd take a bullet for these guys. not in the chest but certainly in the leg"
Moranz's lack of serious commitment to the band seems to hurt Markey's feelings, but the bass player quickly recovers and offers his perspective on playing in the sophmore jakes. "there's not a lot else to do in the town but play an instrument<" Markey deadpanned. "it's like eating spitz but a lot more complicated."

Interviewing the Sophmore Jakes is much like one of their shows, madly off in all directions.
what is clear, however, is that the bands performance at the end of the program friday evening is that it will be high energy and lots of fun. - Frank Mctighe - Macleod Gazette

"Battle of the Bands"

a fort macleod band blew away its big city competition last month.

the Sophmore Jakes topped 13 other bands to win 16 hours of recording time and $300 cash in a battle of the bands put on by the Edmonton Arts District.

"I've never been a big fan of battle of the bands because there is always a loser"
Moranz said philosophically. "but it's great exposure and a great way to meet other bands and make contacts, and sometimes you win".

Sophmore Jakes made the fop four with a performance on Saturday in sir winston churchill square . the band was blown away to learn they had made the cut for the finals.
"we were a little worried about the other bands because they were all crazy good" Marky explained.

to be able to say we closed the show at the winspear center is an amazing thing to be able to come back to southern alberta and say, Moranz added. - Frank Mctighe - Macleod Gazette
