Led Zepplin, The Police, Jimmy Hendrix, The Who; all rock groups memorable for a loud yet tidy sound. Called "power trios" for their basic instrumentation of guitar , bass and drums, it's a sound worth mimmicking. Enter Mount Pearl based power trio So Says Jane. This week on Linernotes, Guitarist / singer Ian Murphy, bassist Peter Miles and drummer Graham Ellsworth dropped by our studios and spoke with Tom Ronan about their CD release and the attraction to three piece rock'n'roll.

- A 7-song release sold at shows and independent music stores in the Atlantic region. Several tracks have recieved radio airplay in classic rock and college radio formats in Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

- A professional demo distributed to venue owners and show promoters. Tracks from these sessions were also made available to fans in streaming form via the band's "myspace" website.

Bio
It's been a good year. In June, 2006, So Says Jane played their first show as a full band. It was a set that rocked and swung, shifting between genres and rich with textures, guitar solos and passionate vocal hooks. It was the sound of a band that was reaching for something, and the in the year that has passed for SSJ that reaching hasn't stopped.
So Says Jane's music is a collection of all their diverse musical influences, filtered down to the format of the rock power trio. Ian Murphy leads the band through the twists and turns of his songwriting, with a command of melody that expresses itself though his earnest voice and unique guitar style. Peter Miles provides a supporting, rhythmic foundation with basslines that weave through the songs while leaving plenty of room. Graham Ellsworth is an explosion behind the drumkit, approaching the SSJ material with the perfect combination of nuance and aggression. Together, the three have developed a sound that blends modern and classic rock and continues to grow with every show.
The band has been steadily winning over audiences in St. John's, with frequent live performances in the downtown club scene. One early performance was recorded and distributed to fans for free though the SSJ myspace website. The live demo helped the band earn a showcase for new artists at the 2006 Music NL awards conference in Stephenville. On the way, SSJ played to a full house in Corner Brook, and the band has worked on maintaining a west coast following. Ambition and evolution eventually lead SSJ to Steve Miller's recording studio, where they recorded a new 4-song professional demo. On the strength of the demo, SSJ booked their first tour, a two-week affair that brought the band's music to receptive new audiences in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Recording and releasing a strong full-length debut CD has been SSJ's main goal since day-one. The feeling from the SSJ following was that an official release was long-overdue, so the band decided to record an e.p. to fill the gap in the meantime. Again working with recording engineer Steve Miller, SSJ banged out a collection of live favorites over a cold winter week. The result, a seven-song disc simply titled "ep", is a document of where the band is now, and a statement of intent for the future. The tracks range from the romantic guitar pop of "Afterthoughts", to the moody alternative rock of "Alcohol". Miller has described the sound of the ep as one that "pops!", and the band has yet to imagine a better expression to describe it.
The ep was released at the end of March with So Says Jane's biggest show to date. The ep release gained the attention of scene-watchers in the media, and the band was happy to see many new faces smiling and dancing along with those who've been there since that first show in June. After a year's worth of reaching out, So Says Jane feels like they're only beginning.
Individual Biographies:
Ian Murphy has been writing original music for over 10 years , and he has performed professionally since 2000 in Halifax, Montreal, and St. John's. A self-taught musician, Ian has studied, performed and recorded in a wide variety of genres including acoustic singer/songwriter, funk, experimental/electronic, and rock. Ian is a professional music instructor, with six years experience teaching private guitar lessons to students of all ages. SO SAYS JANE has allowed Ian to showcase his unique approach to lead guitar and deliver some of his most accessible original material to date.
Graham Ellsworth is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, where he took an Bachelor of Music Degree. He has a long history of drumming in a wide variety of genres. In addition to So Says Jane, Graham has recently performed and/or recorded with The Brad Jefford Trio, Funky Dory and Mopaya. He is also a professional music instructor, and has been teaching lessons privately in St. John's since he graduated from St. FX.
Peter Miles has taken several years of private music instruction in piano and bass guitar. He has recorded and performed professionally on both instruments in a number of diverse musical groups.
