"Soteria Bell"

'I chose to work with Mia and Linda because of their high degree of musicianship and their unique sound. Their voices complement and contrast each other in thrilling ways. They have a strong sense of history as well as great improvisational skills which make them sound ancient and modern at the same time.' - Paul Kelly - Paul Kelly

Bio

Vocalists Mia Shaw &Linda Laasi met when working with the Melbourne Women’s Bulgarian choir, ‘Petrunka’ & quickly realised they had a vocal chemistry that has become their trademark.
Instrumentalists as well as vocalists, in late 2005 after Petrunka, they decided to continue working together & created a group that would very soon feature on the soundtrack to a major Australian film.

In 2006 Soteria Bell were handpicked by none other than Australian music icon Paul Kelly to collaborate with him on the soundtrack to the feature film ‘Jindabyne’ – this collaboration went on to win numerous awards both nationally & internationally, most notably picking up the ARIA Fine Arts award for Best Original Soundtrack.

This incredible achievement quickly bought much-deserved attention to the group, with an invitation from The National Gallery of Victoria to perform a residency during their ‘Art After Dark’ program in 2007. They also played The Maldon & Electundra Music Festivals,
& performed at Wineries & Art Galleries in Melbourne.
Again in 2009 The NGV have invited Soteria Bell to perform as part of ‘Late Night Thursdays’ at Federation Square, & they will perform at 2009 The Apollo Bay Music Festival.

Intricate vocal harmonies, strings & strong, innate musicality are the features of Soteria Bell.
Third member Emily Williams is a highly regarded composer, cellist & vocalist, who brings years of experience & incredible musical skill & innovation to their sound.

As well as original music, the group draw inspiration from ancient & modern cultures & explore & re-interpret the music of regions such as Estonia, Mongolia & Northern Japan to name a few. Merging tradition with technology, lush layers of strings & voice &with accomplished songwriting & arranging, Soteria Bell are an exciting Australian group, continuing in the tradition of The Necks & Dead Can Dance.

Passionate about independent music & without label backing, Soteria Bell continue to forge a path for themselves with their uncompromising original, cinematic sound.
