Bio
Lead by Asahi Suzuki and Brian Girly, the New York based band is comprised of a DJ, and both Jazz and Funk musicians. Their sound is a mashup of sub-culture influences that can easily be categorized as pop music with one fundamental goal – to make you dance.
Soular Light came to be by a chance meeting between Asahi (producer/DJ) and Brian (saxophone) in a small town in Texas. Denton aka “Little D”, is located 50 miles up north from Dallas. It would be here that Asahi and Brian bonded over their similar taste in music, from Jazz to Soul to Hip Hop in it’s Golden Age. “Little D” would also be where they furthered their educations and developed their musical skills together.
At the beginning of their journey in 2009, Asahi was immersed in the hugely popular Hip Hop scene in Dallas. He was amazed at how influential and accepted it was. In particular, turntablism (the art of manipulating sounds and creating music through phonograph turntables and a mixer) which had a huge following and was highly respected.
Then there was Brian, who was studying Jazz at the University of North Texas at the same time, in 2009.
Two completely different musical journeys would suddenly overlap when Brian asked Asahi to record and mix his demo for his first overseas tour in China. Asahi was studying sound engineering at Dallas Sound Lab at the time and was able to freely produce music. It was from there that their journey would begin and continue on.
Soon after Brian and his band members helped produce Asahi’s various Hip Hop projects for Old-Soulz Ent., an entertainment firm in New York City that focuses on producing and promoting quality works from a wide range of art forms. Then in 2010, they both made the huge decision to move to New York City and pursue their goals.
Once in New York City, Asahi was able to gain more exposure as a DJ all over the city by working with Old Souz Ent.. Inspired and living out his dreams, Asahi organized a live Hip Hop band featuring Amanda Diva and Pismo, both of Old Soulz, and lit up the stage with Brian, sharing all their musical treats.
It was at that very moment, that Soular Light was born.
