Bio

"Soulforce" is the english translation of Gandhi's tenet, "Satyagraha." The phrase is a combination of the hindu words for "truth" and "holding firmly." It also pays homage to hip-hop forerunners Afrika Bambaata and Soul Sonic Force.

As experienced political and environmental activists in Buffalo, NY we would often play sets together at some of Buffalo's premier clubs both casually and professionally, occasionally winning talent shows. Upon being offered a chance to open for Courtney Love (Of all people!) at downtown Buffalo's annual Artvoice Street Festival, we formed a musical collective that would come to embrace the energy of hip-hop, the spirit of soul music and the determination of a politically charged community.

After building a strong fan base as a six piece band, we departed from that to focus on blending live instrumentation with produced beats and quanitized drums. Then on January 1st, 2005 we moved to Brooklyn, NY to pursue these musical endeavors. Soon after, legendary Flatbush rapper Vash joined the group and completed the cipher. We have since played shows to large audiences all over New York. Soulforce singer/rapper Flavius has made guest appearances on a number of albums, most recently on Lou Montelione's forthcoming Jazzheads Records release, and performs as a session vocalist for recording artists in New York City.

Learning from past involvement in political campaigns, we work tirelessly to advance musically and spiritually and, like Biggie, to "...spread love the Brooklyn way."
