Bio

Soulshine is a "soul-fueled rock" blend of great lyrics, catchy hooks, memorable melodies, and talented musicianship. It’s all about the fun of playing music live.
Soulshine got its start in 1997 when Joe Lewis was called upon to help form a cover band. A gifted singer/songwriter, Joe had just finished a small Midwest tour as a solo-acoustic act. Through the formation of the cover project, Joe first met John Walker. Though this band didn’t develop, a mutual respect between the two musicians did.
About six months later, John had received a call from Joe who needed a drummer for his new album “Hullabaloo”. John was a percussion student at the University of Missouri and already had a reputation in the local blues scene. During the recording process, they had both sensed the great vibe they had playing together and formed the band Shine.
For the next few years, Shine performed at many events including the Boone County Fair, the National Balloon Race, and the Relay for Life Cancer Society fund-raiser. Not to mention the wonderful venues of The Blue Note, Mojo’s, and the three colleges – Mizzou, Columbia, and Stephens. Shine had a great connection to its audiences, but lack of a committed bass player slowed their growth.
In 2003, Shine had a ton of new music dying to be released to the public. They decided to call upon the skills of Bill Roe. Mild mannered by day, super-bassist by night, Bill had already been playing for five years in a blues project with John. Needless to say, they had grown into one of the best rhythm sections in the Midwest. Since Bill was also known for his engineering skills, he was enlisted and eventually became a member of the band.
Two years of work on the new self-recorded/self-produced CD “Inertia”, has brought out the best in the band. Soulshine will lead your ears through a variety of influences – funk, rock, reggae, jazz, R&B, ska – that are intermingled effortlessly by the band’s talented musical collaboration. It has created a renewed motivation to bring their music to the masses. Shine is dead, but Soulshine lives and a new era has begun.
