"Ones to Watch 2005"

Songs such as the funky 24hr Red Cross and Fallen show they have the talent to write interesting tunes…….Singer Richie Stewart boasts a good voice and can fairly belt out lyrics, while the whole band are a tight outfit.

"Soulstarrs!!!"

“I could name fifty signed bands twice their age who should go along to Soulstarr for some pointers in basic performance and song craft”

- Andy Ingles, The Fly

"Hailing from the Rock Music Mecca that is Bo’ness"

Hailing from the Rock Music Mecca that is Bo’ness (well it has a steam train!), Soulstarr have arrived with the E.P. ‘The Birth of Song: A Failed Attempt At Rock Monstrosity’, to give it its full and glorious title. A six-tracker (well four plus an instrumental bit here and there) that shows off the band as a posse of fine musicians and well gifted songwriters.

Bands write songs for many reasons: Love, sex, drugs, money, revenge, ladies with large posteriors, whatever. You get the feeling that when writing ’21 Grams’, Soulstarr sat down and decided to write a song with the sole purpose of getting it on Grandstand as the soundtrack to next years six nations. With lyrics such as “Sing your national anthem”, “everyone is so near” and other rousing chants, mixed with a more than liberal dose of Doves/Snow Patrol anthemic strumming and drumming, they seem to have hit the button. The track is a fine piece of Indie Rock that is a passionate opener to the EP. And don’t be surprised to see highlights of yet another Wales Grandslam being played with it come next March.

‘Breathe Again’ is the track that has raised most debate on the E.P. It opens into a Radiohead style eerie acoustic sound with some orchestration to keep you company. As the guitars and drumming build to a crescendo, Richie adds more passion and power to his voice and at this point the track becomes very emotional. The close of the track with backing choir re-enforces this, and is almost an entirely different number to the opening minute. And just as the choir and vocals are getting the spirits raised, it fades out, too quickly. More please.

‘Turn To Grey’ returns Soulstarr to a more upbeat Doves style. And although Richie continues to sing parts of the track in a higher range, it doesn’t sound as weak as the introduction to ‘Breathe Again’. In fact it sounds powerful with the more instrumented backing, which is another example of the good overall production and sound to the EP.

‘High 5’s and Handshakes’ is a strange bedfellow to the rest of the EP. Harder, faster and with lots of overdrive. It takes the album from the Indie to the Rock road, and doesn’t seem to fit quite right. The production also seems to take a tumble, with the track sounding grittier, and almost live, in contrast to the sweet clear production values on the rest of the CD. Still it’s a good enough track. - glasswerk.co.uk (Glasgow) David Gibson

"Soulstarr @ 13th Note - 20th November 2005"

Soulstarr @ 13th Note - 20th November 2005

Following a boisterous and busy set from the ˜Conscious Pilot", enter onstage ˜Soulstarr" five lads from Boness who have traversed from their hometown to Glasgow to play in the underbelly of the 13th Note.

Soulstarr were formed in late 2003 and after some hard-graft and gracing many a local stage with their live performance they have also suppored the Kaiser Chiefs, The Ordinary Boys and The Zutons as well as headlining an evening of local talent at King Tuts.

The boys played to a busy basement at the 13th , opening with a flurry of harmonious vocals with ˜21 grams" - the calibre of which would set the benchmark for their remaining six songs. Their set list was delivered in a well structured format albeit peppered with an endearing quirkiness!

Lyrics, were at all times passionately delivered and accompanied by some nimble and quality guitar work, most noticeably on ˜Please Don't Give Up Just Yet" and ˜Takanis".

Altogether, a set energetically delivered and well received by the masses squeezed into the basement at the 13th. If soup be good for the soul, then these guys will be sure to pour you a hearty helping.
