"Soul Summit"

This disc makes a case to bring back the more spontaneous possibilities of live concert CDs.

"Soul Summit Berks 2009"

Jason Miles is an amazing individual. While I didn't get the chance to
interview him, I did watch him work and interact with folks.

Putting together a performance is an art. It is not an easy thing to be
a producer. The end result, which is the actual performance in front of
an audience, can be a success or a flop. Execution from the performers
and the excitement of the audience contribute to that.

I have sat in many rehearsals as a performer and as an observer. To
watch the Soul Summit led by Jason Miles come together for the Friday
evening performance at the Berks Jazz Fest is like viewing a painter
working on canvas. The rhythm section, the horn section and the
vocalists are truly amazing. To witness musicians melding together to
reach a common goal is so exciting and the performance in Reading was no
disappointment.

The Berks Horns, the Soul Survivors, Reggie Young, Bob Babbitt (my homie
from Pittsburgh), Jeff Golub, Steve Ferrone, Richard Elliot, Eric
Darius, Simone and Maysa along with Jason came out and smoked for a 15
tune set. - Soul-Patrol.com

"Soul Summit"

All-star dates can either be invigorating or exasperating, but this 11-song collection matching many topflight instrumentalists equally capable in blues, jazz or R&B territory never degenerates into an ego fest or musically unsatisfying situation.

Instead the assembled cast meshes as though It has been playing together regularly, with ample opportunities provided for different players to excel, though perhaps the most versatile proves saxophonist/flutist Karl Denson, who is outstanding on “Memphis Underground,” and “Can You Feel It,” while ably teaming with fellow saxophonist Richard Elliot on “Chicken and Waffles.” Vocal guests Susan Tedeschi and Maysa also excel on “It’s Raining” and “What A Man” respectively, while Mike Mattison gives “It Tears Me Up” a dynamic new touch. Here’s soul repertory with plenty of individual flourishes and attention.

"Soul Summit Berks 2009"

As one of the most influential composers in the music world, Jason Miles has played with many famous artists on their classic albums, such as Luther Vandross' Power Of Love and Miles Davis' Tutu. With clout like that, Miles must have worked his magic to get the superstar lineup featured on Soul Summit, a live concert that boasts a stellar lineup of musicians gathered to offer their flawless remakes of classic soul songs.

With a roll call that spans the rock, jazz, blues and R&B worlds, Miles was able to orchestrate and capture the old school feel of soul revues at the 2007 Berks Jazz Festival in Reading, Pennsylvania. Classics like "Shotgun," "What A Man," and "Son Of A Preacher Man" are flawless versions of the originals pumped with the energy that these musicians (Susan Tedeschi, Maysa, Mike Mattison, Karl Denson, to name a few) bring to the table. The last track, a medley of James Brown songs, is fitting as a tribute as well as an end to an album which speaks to those listening and feeling like they need to get up and groove!

The talent on this CD is not to be ignored, and everyone who contributed to the one night only summit plays their part in reviving the soul classics that audiences know and love. You don't have to be a fan of classic soul, but one listen to this lively soul revue is enough to make you one for life.
