"Franklin High recording studio brings student music to the masses"

FRANKLIN -- For most young bands and performers, landing a spot on American Idol is not an option to get your music heard.
Luckily for Franklin High School's musicians and singers, there's Sound in the Hall Records.
The brainchild of music teacher Michael Peacock, Sound in the Hall offers students a chance to record and produce a professional quality demo, a Web site where they can post their songs, and help to market and distribute their music -- all free of charge.
Many young performers would have to shell out hundreds of dollars to get a decent-sounding recording, then work hard to build an audience -- much less a record company -- to pay it much attention.
"Just to have this resource here -- a record company in the high school -- this is insane," Peacock said recently in his classroom, where he can be found after school most afternoons, working on his project.
Only a few months after start-up, Sound in the Hall has recorded about 10 bands and performers, Peacock said. They range in style from singer/songwriter Molly Anguish to prog-influenced rock band Skyview Drive to heavier band Nemesis.
"For a band our size that isn't known too well yet, any outlet to the world is good," said sophomore Steve Ackles, a guitarist for Skyview Drive.
Peacock taught for four years at Horace Mann Middle School before moving to the high school last fall. He said he was struck by the talent of students in his classes, Sound Recording and American Popular Music.
"We really have talent," Peacock said. "Just from working with all these artists, we said hey, let's throw them out in the world."
A musician himself, Peacock used to play in bands in California and made local news last year when he ranked an honorable mention in a VH1 songwriting contest.
He said he's tinkered with home-recording for about four years, and his own equipment mixes with the school's in the studio wedged in the back of his classroom.
But getting the music recorded is only one piece of the puzzle. For the rest, Peacock has turned to students, who have done anything from designing the Sound in the Hall logo to playing in a backing band on recordings.
Peacock's right-hand man is sophomore Dan Reeve, who is a drummer and hopes to start a career in the music business as an artist and repertoire (A&R) representative, seeking out talented artists.
Reeve has a head start in that field already, connecting student performers with Sound in the Hall. Though he's in a hard rock band called The Clinic, Reeve says he'll give any style of music a chance.
"I love music more than anything and to have an opportunity like this is excellent," Reeve said. "I was surprised we have that much talent in this school. If we market it right, I think they have potential."
Sound in the Hall is especially valuable because aside from local battles of the bands or small shows at MelDiva coffee shop or churches, there are few venues in or near Franklin for young artists to perform, Reeve said.
"That's why this is great. It's a chance to get noticed," Reeve said. "If Mr. P didn't work here, it wouldn't have happened."
Eventually, Peacock said he hopes to focus his efforts on finding more venues for young performers.
"I have to find some places for these kids to play -- that's step two," Peacock said.

Bio

Everyday I notice the amazing talent and hard work of students here at FHS. I observe singers, songwriters, musicians, and composers with no means to showcase their ability. I knew something had to be done. With a crazy idea and a lot of followers, Sound in the Hall was formed.
Students will be involved with all aspects of music recording and producing which include developing the talent, recording and mastering the material to a polished product, designing CD labels and inserts, as well as marketing and distributing the CD’s to the public. We will also be submitting the material into song contests, to record companies, radio, pod casting, etc. in hopes of gaining attention outside of Franklin. We have some great singers, songwriters, and musicians to be heard, so you are in for an amazing experience!
