"Soundmen Deliver Funky Jazz From Atlanta"

The Southeast of America is experiencing a wonderful renaissance of sorts in the world of funky horn-led bands. Bands like Memphis’ Gambel Brothers Band and Chapel Hill’s Countdown Quartet deftly combine rock, blues and jazz in a way that redefines the jamband sound.

Add to that list the new Atlanta-based quintet The Soundmen. With an emphasis on power chords, jazzy phrasing, bluesy riffs and a saxophonist who just won’t quit, The Soundmen are quickly gaining a reputation as a must-see act.

The Soundmen will perform at Murphy’s in Boone on Saturday, December 13 starting around 10:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.

The Soundmen are led by the impressive bluesy vocals of Will Corden. His voice is a forceful growl like a young southern Joe Cocker and his blues harp contributions add a nice traditional touch to the usually “out there” proceedings when the band gets its instrumental schwerve on.
Joining Corden in The Soundmen are saxophonist Jordan Shalloup, guitarist Myles Brown, bassist Dave Tunkle and drummer Greg Perry.

The Soundmen were the winner of Atlanta’s Next Level contest, a showcase for up-and-coming bands and have attracted the attention of national producers and musicians including Tinsley Ellis who recently called them “one of the most talented young bands to come out of Atlanta in years.”

The Soundmen have spent some time the studio recently and have polished up a nice setlist of original songs that owe more than a little tip of the hat to the experimental blues scene of the late 60s and early 70s. One can hear a little bit of Cream, Traffic or the undervalued British blues band Family in the sound of The Soundmen. But at the end of the day the sound is more original than borrowed.

In addition to the band’s well-composed original tunes, their set includes choice covers by a wide array of artists including Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis, The Allman Brothers Band and John Zorn.

"The Soundmen at JJ Cagney's"

I’ve singled this blissfully retro jazz-funk band out for kudos before, and I’ll happily do so again. With a penchant for busy, syncopated grooves ripped straight from The James Brown Big Note Songbook, this Atlanta quintet makes a crazy-ass old-school racket that would be impressive from a group of 8 or 10 high-stepping sexagenarians, let alone 5 young, skinny kids.

While it’s true that they occasionally let fly with guitar tones and fretboard tactics that betray a working knowledge of the sort of metal and hard rock genres that have come in the wake of Soul Brother Number One’s initial heyday, and which The Godfather of Soul would likely have no truck with, by and large, The Soundmen fly the straight-up funk flag with a fervor rarely heard these days – even from Mr. Dynamite.

In fact, here’s a note to JB himself: Put down the comb, grab the best horn men from your road band, give the rest of the group a 3-week vacation, and hole up in the studio with this energetic, inspired and muscular outfit. Tell vocalist and harmonica player Will Gordon to pipe down, look sharp and stick to the harp. Then grab a mic, sit your ass down behind the Hammond B-3 – like you did in the mid-’60s for Smash Records – and proceed to cut the LP all your devoted apologists have been begging you to make for the past 15 years. You can pay me later. Natural facts.

Fri., JJ Cagney’s.
