"Mythologies - Mud Bay EP"

4/5 stars

Chapeau. - LaQuenelleCulturelle.fr

"Squid Attack!, Paper Brain, Butter, Grandfather - STAFF PICK"

Prepare for the most adorable story ever. As an eighth grader, Isaac Scott won a guitar in a charity auction and immediately started writing his own music. Soon he recruited a bassist named "Panda," and was booked for the school talent show, but young Isaac was still searching for a drummer. As it turns out, his drummer was sitting across from him at the dinner table—his father, Sid. A father/son band like Squid Attack! might appear to be a cheap gimmick that places novelty over quality, but there is something very real about the younger Scott's still-evolving skill as a frontman. With a weathered voice far beyond his years (inexplicably enough, he sounds like David Byrne), the band has hastily assembled a few recordings—the latest of which is released tonight—before Isaac leaves the nest for his freshman year at Evergreen College. While for obvious reasons I don't approve of the "Ezra is dead" chorus in "RRR," the gentle "Samana Clay" is a wondrous work of jangling rock precision and the epic "Grass House/The Moth" rewards listeners with an abrupt tempo shift at the song's halfway point. Isaac, have fun in college, but don't you dare put that guitar down anytime soon. EZRA ACE CARAEFF - The Portland Mercury

"Music in the Schools Showcase: Squid Attack, Charts, Profcal, Fringe Class"

[MOODY, MINIMAL] Some dads play catch with their sons. Some dads help their sons build model trains. Sid and Isaac Scott, the father-son duo behind Squid Attack, would rather spend their time playing bleak, haunting and sparse indie rock songs. On the duo's recent five-track, self-titled EP (where they are joined by bassist/guitarist Ben West), Squid Attack proves itself more than just a gimmick by utilizing Isaac's alarmingly grown-up vocals—how many kids do you know who sound like Blood on the Tracks-era Dylan?—and some stirring minimal songwriting. What better band to raise money for Music in the Schools than a group that proves indie rock is consistent with traditional family values?

"Squid Attack, Mythologies, Lather Rinse Repeat, Ibid - STAFF PICK"

Squid Attack! is the loveable father-son band from Portland, and tonight Issac and Sid Scott return for their first local show since the younger Scott (Issac) left town for Evergreen State College. While up in Olympia, Issac started a solo project, and he'll be preceding the Squid Attack! set with one from his new act Mythologies, which also releases its debut EP, Mud Bay, at tonight's show. While the self-appointed genre descriptor of "ambient punk/noise pop" is partially accurate, I'd also add in the terms "electric folk" and "slow-burning guitar overtures." With Mud Bay, Issac has crafted a subtle but involving work of plugged-in meditations, using layers of amplified stringwork to evoke both dread and desire. To round out the Mythologies live lineup, Issac will be joined by Squid Attack! bassist Ben West, and drummer Alan Bishop. NED LANNAMANN - The Portland Mercury

"Best New Releases 1/14/12"

Mythologies is the Olympia, Washington-based ambient punk/noise pop solo project of Evergreen State College poetry student, guitarist, singer-songwriter Issac Scott, who is also the front-man of Portland indie-rock band Squid Attack!

The Portland Mercury wrote: “there is something very real about the younger Scott’s still-evolving skill as a frontman. With a weathered voice far beyond his years (inexplicably enough, he sounds like David Byrne)…Issac, have fun in college, but don’t you dare put that guitar down anytime soon.”

Portland’s Willamette Week wrote: “Squid Attack proves itself more than just a gimmick by utilizing Issac’s alarmingly grown-up vocals—how many kids do you know who sound like Blood on the Tracks-era Dylan?—and some stirring minimal songwriting.”

Those observations are some pretty high praise for such a young man in a crowded field of indie musicians. Here are two tracks Scott sent us from his new release, Mud Bay. Among Scott’s main influences include Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground, Deerhunter, Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, and Neil Young. - IndieRockCafe.com

"A Pseudo Interview with Issac Scott of Mythologies"

I had heard of Issac's former project with, Squid Attack! a few months back and it was really great to hear that he was embarking on his own solo journey. When it comes to being a musician in any scene or band sometimes there's an opportunity to branch out creatively with something new that you are doing and it seems like Issac is taking it and running. Please enjoy this interview with what we a predicting to be a future Portland music scene 'Up and Comer!' . . . - BoyMeetsMusic.com
