"Myspace Hordes"

Prog fans with ADD will adore the myriad movements, rhythmic punches, motifs, and guitar riffs, running through this tune.  Guitarist Nick Diaz is a musical chameleon who negotiates his cinematic shifts and twists with passion and purpose, and the band ensures there's never a dull moment throughout your listening experience.

"SOURTONGUE comes to visit"

I met the boys in Sourtongue when I was in New Orleans last May for the Tape Op conference. I heard their (then recently finished) CD and I liked their playful style and funky groove.

They just finished a five week tour, and were in Houston for a gig, when they called. We visited, and they played a CD with 4 new songs which impressed me mightily (sp?--Logan will rip me off if it isn't right). They have dropped from a quartet to a trio since we last met, and the change was a good one. Think Les Claypool under the influence of an early Rush obsession, stumbling into a position of power at a Tool rehearsal. Yeah,.... there you go, that's Sourtongue!!! They are that good, but not nearly as self-absorbed as the references bandied about above, (at least not in front of me). - Dan Workman

"SOURTONGUE coming to West Virginia"

From the apocalyptic wasteland of New Orleans, Sourtoungue escapes with their miasmic mix of roots blues, jazz, and grunge to create an avante rock with catchy melodies and thought provoking lyrics. Compared to Primus, Rush, and Mars Volta, they're a must see and hear!

"Review of "SOURTONGUE'S Mechanically Grown Society""

9 stars out of 10

Although you can't say that rock & roll is dead (contrary to what Lenny Kravitz claimed), it did temporarily undergo CPR for a while. With the music scene dominated by hip-hop and emo, real rock was on a headfirst dive into irrelevance. And then, like a much-needed cavalry, the Darkness arrived, followed by Jet, each of them shamelessly peddling the booming FM sounds of the '70s.

New York's Sourtongue (what a splendid name for band!) give further validity to the theory that rock & roll still has plenty of life in it. Nope, the gas tank isn't empty yet; far from it.

Although nowhere near as flamboyant as the Darkness or as raw as Jet, Sourtongue kicks out the jams with the same fiery passion and sonic punch. On "Katrina," Sourtongue captures the mid-'70s highs of glam with enough garage-blasting volume and rapid-fire percussion to keep the neighbours awake for weeks. The band wastes no time in proving to you that they can shake the shack. On "The Waltz" and "Crimson Sun," guitarist Nick Diaz piles enough Led Zeppelin riffs to build several houses of the holy.

Led Zep is a key influence on the group but thankfully they're not trying to cop them. In terms of heaviness, yes, Sourtongue can approach Led Zep's Big Bang, especially on "In the Valley of the Sweet Routine." At other times, though, Sourtoungue resembles Soundgarden ("Still Awake") and Rush ("Mechanically Grown," a dead ringer for the Canadian power trio.)

There's honestly nothing new here; however, that's the largest selling point of the record. It's blissful for nostalgia for those who long for rock & roll in its purest form.

Bio

From the epicenter of America’s vast hurricane alley three souls have emerged seeking to capture the harsh truths and reality that life has to offer. Through music they communicate what they’ve seen and heard, creating a miasmic sound very few can deny.

SOURTONGUE began in a tiny studio apartment during the fall of 2003 in the Uptown area of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was here where Nick Diaz and long time friend Josh Milligan originally composed, in seven days, the first ten songs the band would use as the foundation for the progressive sound they have now developed. Influenced by traditional roots, singer-songwriter, blues, jazz, folk, early 60’s and 70’s rock and 90’s grunge, SOURTONGUE has often been likened to Rush, Led Zeppelin, and even new prog rockers The Mars Volta.

SOURTONGUE is a band with a large musical spectrum and an even larger sound. They break genre barriers through a combination of musical taste and knowledge intertwined with catchy melodies and thought provoking lyrics. The words speak, the guitars scream, and the drums move.

Through a full schedule, on the road and at home, the band unleashes a relentless live show of musical and spiritual energy that captures the listeners’ attention. With two independent EP’s (The Farm Sessions, the New Songs) and one full-length album ('SOURTONGUE'S Mechanically Grown Society') under their belts, the boys are currently focusing on distributing their records and generating press for the group. With their recent relocation to New York City and with the addition of Alexander Hayes on bass and Nick Diaz taking over lead vocal duties, the group looks towards an even brighter future.

Free from restriction and societal norms, SOURTONGUE enthusiastically and nomadically spreads their music around the country. As their lives and music harmoniously weave in and out of genre and melodies, SOURTONGUE is left only to follow time, like notes on a staff.
