"The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Girls Names, Southern"

It's a glorious sunny evening and it seems a pity to be heading indoors to The Stiff Kitten. Thankfully the promoter, Red Roof, has struck gold once more by bringing another fantastic, yet underrated band to Belfast.
Fresh from a successful E.P. launch in the Mandela Hall last week, Southern are the opening act this evening, but only a handful of people mill around during their set, the youthful trio showering our sun-kissed heads with soulful, uplifting, summery vibes. Making their music with only a minimalist drum kit, acoustic guitar and soaring harmonies from siblings Thom and Lucy Southern, they have a surprisingly full-bodied sound. They nail a cover of Angus and Julia Stone's 'Big Jet Plane' and round off the set with the country tinged, foot stomping tune 'World Don't Shine'. - BBC Across the Line

"Live Review: Desert Hearts, The Holy Innocents, Southern at QUB"

Thursday night has rolled round again and it’s time for this week’s Radar. Opening up proceedings to a scattered few, Southern take to the stage, this time however as a two piece. Tonight they are minus the vocal talents of female singer Lucy Southern; apparently due to exhaustion. Absentees aside however, Southern has gained a new member, drummer Gerry Morgan, performing tonight for the first time live, he makes for a great addition to the indie-folk stylings of Southern. Inventive and tasteful, Gerry adds a mixture of brush technique and a cowbell thrown in for good measure, providing a great percussive bedding for Thom‘s soft vocal and jangly guitar.
After some slightly awkward band plugging, Thom and Gerry plough on through their set, that as two piece, provides a rather interesting slant on Southern‘s material. People Said showcases Thom‘s ability to write an upbeat, pop gem of song that carries through beautifully tonight with Gerry‘s drum beats and fills. Unfortunately this early in the night, there just isn’t the audience that Southern deserve, however as Gerry leaves the stage for Thom to perform the slow ballad Remember, it is easy to see just how much talent this young artist has and how he manages to hold his own over the loud ramblings of the crowd. Southern, whilst still finding their sound have all the time in the world to do so and with such a solid foundation in Thom‘s songwriting it is not hard to see why they are on the rise.
