"Southern Thunder Sweeps Country Music Awards"

12/05/07

Rockmart-based rockers Southern Thunder recently took home a slew of awards at the recent Georgia Country Gospel Music Association.

Held in Dalton, the award ceremony featured a gospel portion as well as country, and Southern Thunder seemed to sweep the awards.

One of the bands vocalists, Miranda Thompson, took home honors for Female Vocalist of the Year as well as Most Promising Entertainer of the Year. Lead singer and guitarist Bennie Grey earned Entertainer of the Year honors while Thompson, fellow vocalist Amy Gray and lead guitarist Frankie Hilburn earned the Songwriter of the Year award.

But all the members of Southern Thunder earned the prestigious award for 2007 Band of the Year.

We label ourselves as a Southern rock/country band, Thompson said, because the majority of our music is Southern rock but anyone who comes to hear us can tell that we play a variety of everything from rock to country to funk. We try to play a variety of music to suit everyone.

With its strong showing at the award ceremony, the band now progresses to the national level, the North America Country Music Association International Awards that will be held in Tennessee in March.

Were very excited about winning the awards, Thompson added. Our hard work and dedication throughout the year have paid off.

Readers can catch Southern Thunders next live performance Friday at Elvis Blue Christmas being held in the new concert hall in Rockmart. The show begins at 6 p.m.

Admission is $5 or a new childs toy. All proceeds benefit the Christmas For Kids program.

"Rockmart Rockers Bring Home Two Trophies"

06/28/07

Rockmart-based Southern Thunder made plenty of noise at a recent Battle of the Bands competition in Roswell.

The noise was well received: the group brought back the award for Best Country Rock Band as well as the coveted Peoples Choice award.

There were about ten bands there and they played a variety of rock and country music, said Miranda Thompson, one of the groups vocalists. Each band had a 30-minute set. The crowd was really supportive of us. We were the only ones who had people dancing.

It was great, because we got an award that was judged by experts, Thompson said. Plus we got one that the people voted on.

Area residents can catch the group as they headline the entertainment on Saturday at the annual 4th of July Barbecue at Tom Pittman Fields in Aragon. Southern Thunder takes the stage at 8 p.m.
