Sovereign’s mature, raspy tenor is a refreshing departure from the mainstay of his contemporaries, and is reminiscent of classic R&B singers; yet embodies a realness of what’s represented in the good R&B of today. His songwriting proves that there can be a balance between meaningful lyrics and tasteful phrasing in order to connect with his audience.

A true musician, he was self-taught on the keyboards by age six, and producing tracks by age eleven. Taking his craft seriously, Sovereign also majored in audio-production in university. Soon after graduation, he was in demand for his brilliant work on the keys, as a bandleader and eventually the headliner. An engaging performer, his rich sexy voice glides over groove–laden tracks with beautiful melodies and head-nodding rhythms.

The son of Jamaican parents, Sovereign grew up soaking in mixture of reggae, soul music, and jazz, and later fell in love with house and hip-hop. Naturally, his musical influences are eclectic. Sting and Stevie are favorite songwriters, the genius of Quincy Jones and J-Dilla have seeped into Sovereigns work as well, and as a performer he channels the best; Frankie Beverly, Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross.

“Original Red” is the latest project from Sovereign, a gritty wake up call to the predictable pop artists of today. Songwriter, producer, top line vocalist, musician and front man, Sovereign satisfies fans, surprises critics and proves himself as a true talent with staying power. Sovereign has created a sound to be reckoned with for the here and now, that could be the sound of the future.
