"Space Neighbors Land At Calapooia Brewing this Friday!"

From the outer regions of the Heart Nebula, or Corvallis as it is commonly know, come those fabulous freaks of funk, SPACE NEIGHBORS. They are the kind of band that starts the party, makes the party, and is the hub of the party, throwing off sparks to burn through your ego and return your cold, hardened core to its proper molten state. - Paul - Calapooia Brewing Co

"Corvallis Space Neighbors"

Recently I had the pleasure of watching Jenna Summer Smith, the lead singer of local superband Space Neighbors, play at the 1st street eatery/venue Cloud 9.
Space Neighbors certainly put on a fantasic show: more than any other band in Corvallis, they actively engage their audience. Over the last few months their audience has grown larger and more varied, expanding to include a diverse mixture of people from within our community. The show on the tenth of September packed local venue Cloud 9 with an array of color and creativity that is typically reserved for larger fairs and festivals.
The appeal of Space Neighbors reaches across different musical and social niches, partly because they present an opportunity to show off creativity, and partly because of their wildly dance-able music. A typical show presents a theme-- Angels and Demons being a recent example-- offering an opportunity for concert-goers to do something different and outlandish. Space Neighbors fans like to emulate the energy of the music and the performers, often reinventing their identities for the night by dressing up in shamelessly awesome costumes.
While most of the group’s songs incorporate some sort of intergalactic theme not unlike those in the music of Parliament and Sun Ra, their take home message encourages fans to do something out-of-this world--or at least out of their comfort zones--even in their home town. Songs like “Made in My Home Town” remind Space Neighbors fans of the band’s local roots and community-centric bent. The Space Neighbors keep up a fairly busy schedule. Their most recent performance took place last Saturday at the BS (Music) Fest at Weatherford Hall. Upcoming events include a show on October 8th at Cloud 9, a show on the 28th at Bomb’s Away Cafe, and a featured slot along with Audiophilia headlining the Whiteside Theatre’s Frightside Jam on October 29th. - Harrison White, Ayla Rodgers - The Corvallis Weekly, September 20, 2011

Bio

The Space Neighbors are an eclectic group centered in the vibrant cosmic vortex of Corvallis, Oregon. Blasting off at the speed of fun, we aim to make you feel at home so you can kick off the space boots and get your groove on!

Formed in 2009 originally as a trio to develop hiphop soundscapes, including current members Yohan and Rigel 7. The group eventually evolved to focus on more danceable grooves after addition of keyboardist Jason, aka Milky Jay. The space themed element came along with much inspiration from then guitarist Joel's son's infatuation with Futurama. With the addition of lead vocalist Jenna Summer Smith the newly formed space crew found strong footing in the Corvallis area inspiring many wild nights of galaxy-fueled dance ecstasy.

Local success has maintained since Summer 2009 with capacity filling shows in the small local venues as well as some success in out of town ventures in Eugene, Albany, and Portland. Space Neighbors has also played successfully in some of the local festivals like Mayday and Da Vinci Days.

2011 saw the completion of their first full length album - Escape Pod - which has received numerous positive, albeit local, reviews. Unfortunately, guitarist Joel left orbit, ultimately replaced by Nick (aka Nick of Time) later that year. Nick brought a new vocal element as well as his own style of guitar work which continues to bring excitement and evolution to the Space Neighbor sound.
