"Speed Governor 7" Review"

Justin Hemminger, Nick La Russo and Chris McConnell pulled out all the stops for their debut 7-inch: killer cover art, gold vinyl and, oh yeah, Steve Albini on the boards.

The band pilgrimaged to Albini's Chicago hideout Electrical Audio last year to lay down three tracks. Albini, the underground icon and provocateur, is known for a stark engineering approach that attempts to portray a band as realistically as possible.

In this case, that means spindly post-punk deeply in debt to indie-rockers of the '90s and early '00s, like Silkworm, Archers of Loaf and the Detachment Kit.

Speed Governor (or is it SPD GVNR?) revives that bygone era of gruff but approachable "college rock," emphasizing melody but defined by bittersweet fuzzbox jangle. - Columbus Alive (2/11/2010)

Bio

Speed Governor is from Columbus, Ohio. We are neither a metal band (as one might infer from our name) nor a "shitgaze" band (as one might guess with some knowledge of our hometown scene). We play indie-rock, you know, the kind that Eric Bachmann wrote pretty much every Archers of Loaf song about.

Anyway, we just released a 7" record recorded by that Steve Albini guy. It sounds really good. That was really important to us; like I said, we're not a "shitgaze" band.

Allow me to introduce, um, us:
-I'm Justin Hemminger. I play the guitar and sing. I also eat barbecue and write band biographies.
-Chris McConnell is our drummer. He used to be the bass player in the band Edison (from Altoona, PA). They were one of those bands that got scooped up in the '90's major label signing frenzy. Like most of those bands, they never got rich or famous.
-Nick La Russo is our bass player. When he was in high school, he was in a band with Adam Elliott, who would go on to be the drummer/singer for Times New Viking. Did I mention that we're not a "shitgaze" band?

We've been together for a little over a year and in that time, we've played shows with such bands as Bottomless Pit (ex-Silkworm), Japandroids, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, and Via Audio. We've also played with a bunch of lesser-known bands (Red Collar, Kid You'll Move Mountains, Fox Japan, The New Dumb, Koala Fires) that are every bit as good as the super-hyped bands listed above.
